Since the hospital incident, Alaric and I had been locked in a cold war.
At school, many who enjoyed watching the drama between us noticed something was amiss.
During the break, Alaric's gang of cronies, with their arms slung over each other, leaned over and asked:
"Alaric, did you have a fight with Dolors?"
Our classes were adjacent to each other, and their conversation easily carried over.
It felt as though they were deliberately speaking for me to hear.
From across the half-meter gap, Alaric's cold gaze fell on me before he let out a scoff.
His friends immediately exchanged knowing smiles:
"What fight? Dolors is such a simp—would she even dare fight with Alaric?"
"Exactly. It's probably Alaric who's ignoring her."
"Look at her pretending to be indifferent. Bet she'll be trailing after him with puppy eyes in no time. Wanna bet?"
They all agreed enthusiastically.
It was because the old me had been such a simp, tailing after Alaric Thornbridge almost every day.
They assumed I hadn't changed.
Their words seemed to boost Alaric's bruised ego a little.
He smirked silently, casting me an unreadable glance.
I couldn't help but roll my eyes.
Drama king.
Seeing that Alaric had finally lightened up, the group exchanged another look and cautiously suggested:
"Alaric, it's Blake's birthday today. Wanna hit up the bar tonight?"
Without a second thought, Alaric replied, "Sure."
Blake immediately said, "Great. I'll go ask my mom for some money. Tonight's on me."
Alaric frowned slightly and said, "It's your birthday. How can you pay?"
"But the others' parents are strict, and they can't get any money."
"I'll cover it," Alaric said decisively.
The others immediately looked triumphant after Alaric's word, their faces filled with satisfaction. They hurried to flatter him:
"As expected of Alaric, always looking out for the bros."
"With someone as loyal as Alaric, how could a girl like Dolors ever deserve him?"
