After the break, Alaric Thornbridge stormed up to me and threw a set of car keys and a bank card in front of me:
"I said, I won't accept your charity."
He paused, then added coldly:
"And stop wasting your time on me. I will never like you."
Standing at the bottom of the stairs, I looked up at him with confusion.
I couldn't understand. Alaric, who couldn't even afford a proper meal and had to run over twenty kilometers daily to take care of his sick mother, why wouldn't he accept the car and the card I had given him?
Just like I couldn't understand why, despite meeting boys more handsome and accomplished than him, I was utterly obsessed with Alaric, earning the scorn of everyone at our school as his pathetic, lovestruck shadow.
These strange thoughts had barely surfaced before an unknown force crushed them down.
Then, as if programmed, I bit my lip with an air of meekness and submission, picked up the keys and card, and cautiously handed them back to him:
"Alaric, I'm not trying to pity you. I'm just worried about you."
Alaric's eyes flashed with pure revulsion:
"Your concern makes me sick."
He suddenly pushed me hard. I lost my balance and tumbled down the stairs.
A wave of dizziness overwhelmed me.
In that moment, my brain was flooded with memories—no, not memories. A storyline.
