Zach approached me with a glass of juice. "Want some?"
I took it instinctively, pulled my gaze away, and murmured, "Thanks."
Zach didn't say anything, waiting until I took a few sips before glancing at Dr. Midnight not far away. He spoke cryptically, "Frostie, you two aren't right for each other."
I held the cup without saying a word.
Zach continued, "Someone like Dr. Midnight... he won't ever love anyone. To him, you're just a little sister. But I'm different. I truly like you. We're the same age, we have more in common, and we can grow up together. Isn't that better?"
I slowly put the cup down on the table.
Then I raised my eyes, looked him in the eye, and said seriously, "Even if it's not Dr. Midnight, it won't be you."
His grip on the glass tightened. "Why?"
I saw his eyes redden slightly. His body, wrapped in a crisp shirt, was trembling imperceptibly.
"Why did you like me before, but suddenly you don't anymore?"
It was hard to explain the nature of liking and disliking to him.
As someone born with privilege and adoration, he probably couldn't understand what it was like for others not to feel the same way.
He probably couldn't understand.
I glanced once more at Dr. Midnight amidst the clinking glasses and sighed, leaving the banquet hall.
Perhaps Zach was right.
This place really wasn't for me.
I longed for the stage and the lights. If I were trapped in a place like this, I'd never be happy.
I waited for a taxi at the gate of the estate.
Suddenly, steady footsteps echoed from behind me.
Those footsteps were all too familiar.
But I didn't dare turn around, standing there stiffly, holding my breath.
I didn't know how long had passed.
It may not have even been a minute.
Then, I suddenly heard a soft sigh, "You came here on your own."
