Zach seemed to snap out of it, releasing me and returning to his cold demeanor.
Zach and I both turned our heads to see Dr. Midnight standing there, a faint smile playing at the corners of his mouth. His gaze swept over the two of us.
But that smile—there was something unsettling about it.
Zach spoke first. "What brings you here?"
Dr. Midnight replied casually, "Just wandering around."
Zach looked a little awkward. "The dance competition is over, but I have a running event later. Will you be watching?"
"No, I have some work to do at the hospital," Dr. Midnight said lightly.
"Then I won't hold you up," Zach offered.
"No," Dr. Midnight said suddenly.
Zach froze. "What?"
Dr. Midnight didn't look at me. Instead, he said, "I'm not familiar with your school. I might get lost. You'll escort me to the gate."
Zach gritted his teeth and gave me a reluctant glance before following his cousin away.
As soon as they left, I quickly ran outside.
On my way past a trash can, I noticed a bouquet of baby's breath. It was stunningly beautiful.
Baby's breath was my favorite flower.
There was no way anyone from inside the school could have ordered it. It must have been brought in by someone from outside.
Suddenly, I remembered Dr. Midnight's slightly melancholic expression earlier.
My heart started pounding wildly.
It wasn't the same as when Zach had confessed to me.
This time, my damaged heart was beating for another man.
