For a period after that, I never saw Kart again.
He seemed to have disappeared suddenly.
The next news I heard about him was from my assistant, who said that his team had indeed embezzled money and run away.
I sat in my office, expressionless, and asked her, "How much did they run off with?"
My assistant hesitated, her lips trembling. "Three million."
I sneered.
Three million wasn't much. The house and car I bought for Kart totaled over ten million.
But for him, who was now penniless, three million felt like an astronomical sum.
The assistant hesitated. "Mrs. Ashwood, I'm not worried about him being in danger, but I'm worried he might come and cause trouble for you."
She spoke as if it were a prophecy.
In the afternoon, Kart appeared in front of me.
It had only been a month, but he looked much more haggard. When he saw me, the sharpness in his eyes was gone.
"Mom!"
I had just gotten out of the car when he called out to me, his face bearing a smile. "Do you have time? Let me treat you to a meal."
"I have an appointment." I glanced at my watch. "If you have something to say, say it now."
Kart rubbed his hands nervously, speaking hesitantly. "Mom, can you lend me some money?"
"How much?"
"Five million!"
I found it amusing. "As far as I know, you were scammed out of three million."
"So you've been quietly watching over me all this time, I knew you couldn't bear to see me like this!" Kart's eyes sparkled with hope. "Yes, I was indeed swindled out of the money. I admit, I should've listened to you back then. Please give me another chance. This time, I swear I'll make a comeback."
"Tsk." I mocked with a smile. "Let's not even mention that I've severed ties with you. Even if you are still my son, I won't give you this money."
Kart's expression changed instantly. "What do you mean by that?"
I answered softly, "Nothing, I just think you're foolish. Giving you money would be like throwing it away."
These words successfully angered Kart.
He clenched his fists and gritted his teeth. "I'm your son, you can't treat me like this!"
I wasn't intimidated at all. "I thought everything that needed to be said was made clear a long time ago."
"It's because you won't let me marry Amily!" Kart raised his voice angrily. "Alright? Just give me the money first, and once I'm back on my feet, I'll come back and marry her!"
Before I could rebut, Cyrus slowly walked out of the restaurant and said in a deep voice, "There's no need. You're not worthy of my daughter."
