I marveled at how thick-skinned a person could be.
I asked, coldly, "Why should I help you?"
Velvet gritted her teeth. "I'm Kart's woman. I can't pay, and it's his face that's at stake. He's your son. Don't you think this has something to do with you?"
I smiled faintly, stepping back with Amily. "Miss Velvet, do you know why I walked this way even though I could hear your voice?"
Velvet's eyes lit up with hope. "You and Kart are family. You must want to help him..."
"No," I shook my head. "I came to watch you make a fool of yourself."
My voice was loud enough that everyone around us heard, and they burst into laughter.
After the show was over, I had planned to leave with Amily.
But out of nowhere, Kart appeared, pushing his way through the crowd and coming toward us, shouting angrily:
"Mom, if you don't want to help, fine, but why humiliate Velvet?"
Velvet immediately turned and threw herself into his arms. "Kart, why can't I use the card you gave me?"
Kart gritted his teeth, glaring at me with such venom.
It was as though I wasn't the mother who had raised him for twenty-three years, but a sworn enemy.
My heart gradually turned cold.
"You don't need to beg him, I'll handle this for you."
Kart pulled out a card I had never seen before and snapped at the manager, "Use this, you arrogant fool!"
Not long after, the manager returned having swiped the card.
I frowned slightly and studied Kart.
Where did he get the money?
I clearly remembered that his bankrupt company had always been in the red; it was impossible for it to suddenly turn around.
