The office fell into a deathly silence.
After a long pause, I finally spoke, breaking the stillness: "I'll ask you one last time. Do you really insist on marrying this woman?"
Seeing my tone soften, Kart tugged at the corner of his mouth, revealing a mocking smile. "Yes."
I suppressed the anger rising within me. "Fine."
He mistook my restraint for compromise, and turning to Velvet, he whispered, "We've won."
His expression and tone were those of a prince who had defeated the dark lord and claimed the princess as his own.
I smiled mockingly.
Amily, however, sensed something was wrong and quickly gestured to Kart.
"Kart, don't be impulsive. Mrs. Ashwood, please give him some time to think this through."
Kart immediately raised his voice, as though fearing I might change my mind, and snapped at Amily.
"There's no need for your pretense. I don't need more time to consider. I'm here to inform you both—I'm marrying Velvet, and there's another matter."
I had long since given up hope on this son of mine, but curiosity held me back, so I forced myself to ask.
"What is it?"
Kart raised his chin arrogantly, as if he already knew what was coming.
"Transfer the company shares to me in advance."
I nearly laughed out of frustration. "Why?"
I had never noticed before, but now Kart resembled his ungrateful father more than ever.
His tone was filled with entitlement.
"I'm your only son. After you die, the company will still be mine, right? I'm just taking my shares in advance."
As soon as he spoke, Amily's expression changed instantly.
"Kart, stop talking nonsense!"
"Not your business."
I became oddly calm, a deep sense of sorrow replacing the turbulence in my heart.
I asked quietly, "Who taught you that? Your drunken father, or your mistress of a stepmother?"
"I won't allow you to insult my stepmom. She's the kindest woman in the world," Kart immediately interrupted me.
"Fine." I nodded, a mocking smile on my lips. "I've indeed spoiled you too much over the years, to the point where you've forgotten who gave you this comfortable life."
