In the end, I agreed to give Roy one more chance.
"As long as he has no contact with Liana for a month, I won't consider divorce anymore."
Both sets of parents witnessed this agreement.
His face lit up with joy, and he agreed immediately.
He seemed to think that my proposal was just an easy task for him.
Both families also breathed a sigh of relief.
But only I knew.
For him, this was a losing bet.
Roy blocked Liana.
He really stopped contacting her.
He left the group, unfollowed all her accounts, and even showed me screenshots of his phone every day, ensuring that his activity was spotless.
When Drew heard this, he was surprised:
"MiMi, you're not planning to get back with your ex-husband, are you?"
He leaned in, curious. He seemed playful, but he always kept a respectful distance from me.
Drew knew about the issues between Roy and me.
During our business trip, he carefully analyzed the situation and offered me a solution.
"Use their tactics against them."
"Let Roy experience what it's like to have a close relationship with a friend of the opposite sex."
The effect was quite apparent.
But now, I had come to see this man for who he truly was.
"Our problem was never Liana."
I could see the worry in Drew's eyes, but I was calm and resolute: "The outcome of divorce won't change."
It seemed that both sets of parents thought I was reconsidering and that I might relent.
But after sending my parents off, I scheduled the abortion.
That day was Liana's birthday.
How did I know?
Because Liana was the only girl in their circle, every year, her birthday was a must-attend event for everyone.
Rain or shine.
I deliberately chose that day, not out of spite.
But because I didn't want Roy to disturb me on that day.
Drew was the one who took me there.
On the way, he cried harder than I did.
"I'm serious, it's not impossible to get rid of the father and keep the child. Worst case, I'll adopt the kid myself, anyway, I'm never getting married..."
Drew had a first love he was very close to, but sadly, she passed away when he was twenty.
Since then, he's hidden behind a carefree facade, and for years, he's been alone.
"MiMi, are you sure you don't want to reconsider? I'll cover half the cost of raising the child."
Even while waiting outside the operating room, he kept insisting.
But I remained calm:
"I am me first, and only then would I be the child's mother."
Drew was at a loss for words. He gave me a complex look and nodded, "As a friend, I respect all your decisions. As a man, I understand your determination to leave Roy."
I forced a slight smile.
I didn't need to see it to know how bleak my expression was.
Even though I had already made up my mind, my eyes still welled up the moment I turned away.
My flat stomach didn't make me feel like a mother.
But I admit.
It was for the sake of this child that I didn't directly ask for a divorce, deciding instead to give Roy a chance to empathize.
Unfortunately, he didn't seize it.
