When we got back to the neighborhood, I saw Siena again.
This time, it was directly in the elevator.
She was a bit surprised as well, offering me an awkward but polite smile.
It was probably late, so it was just the two of us in the elevator.
She started the conversation, "You live here too? I just moved in."
I was planning to just respond with a few "Mm-hm," "Yeah," and "Oh."
But then she brought up Tate.
"I heard he got hit on the head and was in a coma for days before he woke up. I wonder how he's recovering and if there are any aftereffects," she said, a hint of guilt in her voice. "He called me the day he got hurt, but I was busy moving and didn't pick up. Now, I'll never know what he wanted to tell me that day."
My fingertip trembled slightly, and I stared at her in a daze as the pieces of the puzzle started to come together in my mind.
I recalled what Daniella had said.
"My brother was hit right below your apartment."
"He must have had a reason for coming to see you. Maybe he wanted to get back together or something."
Maybe he wasn't coming to see me.
He was coming to see Siena.
When I got home, Tate was once again waiting for me like he had been for a long time. He took my bag, handed me my slippers, and even crouched down to gently massage my ankle.
But this time, I couldn't accept it with a clear conscience.
I pulled up a selfie of Siena from her social media and asked, "Is she pretty?"
Tate looked at it for a moment. "Just so so."
"Just so so" from him basically meant "very good."
Keep in mind, the best he ever said about me was "passable."
I said, "How about I send you to her place?"
Tate didn't speak for a long moment. He just stared at me, his jawline seeming a bit tense.
After some consideration, I called Daniella and told her about running into Siena in the building and my suspicions.
"You might have the wrong person. I'm not the one who can help Tate regain his senses."
Daniella hesitated on the other end, "Uh... well, it's hard to say."
"Delaying his recovery wouldn't be good," I said, glancing at Tate beside me. "Your brother's been with me for so long, and he's still not showing any signs of improvement. He can't even shave his own beard properly. You should contact Siena as soon as possible and see if she's willing to help."
The next day, Daniella and Siena showed up at my door.
They were here to pick him up.
Today is Tate's birthday. I had planned to make him a small cake, wear that mint green dress he loves, and take him to the observatory to watch the stars.
I guess there won't be a chance now.
Before he was taken away, I asked Tate if there was any gift he wanted.
His lips pressed into a thin line, and he grabbed my hand.
I tried to pull away, but he held on tightly.
Daniella gave an awkward laugh, "Roe, why are you so reluctant to leave...?"
Siena linked arms with him, smiling sweetly, "Don't worry, Sister Yuan, I'll take good care of Tate."
I couldn't quite describe what I was feeling. I looked up at him and slowly pulled my hand out of his grasp.
……
When my bestie found out I returned the hundred thousand dollars, she praised my noble character for not being blinded by money.
Right now, all I have in my heart is that last word.
A day later, I messaged Siena, asking if he was adjusting well.
When I heard from Siena that he was adjusting just fine, I couldn't help but curse Tate a few times in my mind.
All that clinging to me, all that reluctance to leave—it was all fake.
The one he likes is Siena.
