Due to the fever-reducing medication, I drifted off to sleep on the sofa. When I woke up, it was dark outside.
When Vivian saw that I had woken up, she ran over and reached out to feel my forehead.
"You've finally broken your fever. I cooked you some oatmeal and kept it warm on the stove. Wait here, I'll get you a bowl."
The empty room felt less lonely with Vivian's presence.
I hugged my knees and sat on the sofa, giving a weak smile.
Crying babies get fed, but I was never one to cry.
Last winter, when I was on a business trip elsewhere, I couldn't buy a plane ticket to return for Derek's birthday and had to take a green-skin train.
I spent five hours on the train. By the time I arrived at the restaurant, Beatrice was smearing cake on Derek's face, and even with cream all over his face, he was smiling indulgently.
I clearly remembered that once, I had wanted to do the same, but Derek refused without hesitation, with a hint of reproach in his eyes: "Riya, you know I have a phobia of dirt."
And his friends watched with amusement, mocking me.
"What are you thinking about? Drink the oatmeal." Vivian put the bowl of oatmeal in my hands, interrupting my thoughts.
After drinking half the bowl, I felt better.
Bored, Vivian sat next to me and started scrolling through her phone. She came across Beatrice's post and couldn't help cursing.
"Tsk, shameless."
She held the phone in front of me. "Look at this sugar-coated villain."
Beatrice had posted several photos from a bar.
In the photos, Beatrice, wearing pajamas and a bit tipsy with flushed cheeks, had Derek's arm around her shoulder, and they looked like a couple.
The caption read: "The best relationship is when you are always by my side, always treating me like a kid."
Even knowing that they had been together last night and might have done intimate things, I felt only a slight pang of jealousy. The expected heart-wrenching pain didn't come, and I even finished the entire bowl of oatmeal.
Now, I felt much better.
Vivian became even angrier when she read the comments from Derek's friends under Beatrice's post.
"I'm so mad, Riya. That bastard Derek said that you running away this time was to force a marriage, and that you'll definitely come back."
After a moment, I met her gaze, soothing her anger with a smile. "Relax, I'm not that delirious."
I stood up and walked into the bedroom to pack the things I had brought back yesterday and the items originally in this apartment.
It must be said that Derek not only filled my memories but also many of my belongings were associated with him.
Throughout this ten-year, one-sided journey, I had never wavered.
It was love at first sight in high school, and I worked hard for three years to finally get into the same university as him.
I thought I would continue to pine for him, but unexpectedly, in my third year of university, I became his girlfriend.
I cherished my love for him carefully and willingly became his gentle and considerate girlfriend, but my passion was never reciprocated, and all I ever got in return was his indifference and restraint.
"Vivian, I've packed my things. Can you call the post office to pick them up?"
I'm going to send everything related to Derek back to him!
Didn't Derek say I was forcing a marriage?
Well, sorry, but he's thinking too much.
