Dashawn obviously heard as well, but he didn't intend to let go of me; instead, he held me even tighter.
He even whispered softly in my ear: "Breathe."
Separated by a wall, Dashawn and I were entangled here, while they were having a conversation over there.
"I heard that the Woodward Family's debts have been settled. Has she found a new backer?"
Edgar fell silent for a moment, his tone colder: "A new backer? She wouldn't dare."
"True, everyone knows how much Maren loves you. How could she possibly be interested in anyone else?"
I heard Edgar's satisfied laughter.
Then came the sound of their footsteps receding.
I breathed a sigh of relief, and Dashawn also released me.
He lowered his head onto my shoulder, his tone tinged with frustration.
"Do you like him that much? Can't you like me?"
"What am I lacking compared to him?"
"I don't..."
Finally having a chance to explain, I quickly pulled out my chat records with Kelsie, showing that we had agreed to meet here long ago to discuss cooperation, and that I hadn't come here because of Edgar.
"If you still don't believe me, I can take you to Kelsie and have her vouch for me."
After saying that, I tried to pull Dashawn along to find Kelsie.
Dashawn pulled me back into his arms.
"I trust you."
"As long as you say no, I believe you."
At that moment, Dashawn's eyes seemed to regain their brightness.
To prevent any future issues, Dashawn added:
"But if I ever find out that you've really strayed, I'll feed your lover to the dogs and break your legs, keeping you by my side forever, so you can never escape."
I felt that Dashawn was capable of doing such things. For instance, even though he hadn't done anything yet, my legs were already weak.
Dashawn asked: "Are you coming to my place tonight?"
"No."
After what he put me through yesterday, I wanted to rest today.
But Dashawn wasn't going to let me off the hook.
The hand around my waist started to wander, as if he would continue unless I agreed.
I hastily grabbed his hand: "Okay, okay, but tonight I just want to sleep."
"No problem, you can sleep."
Dashawn spoke confidently, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
Edgar announced his relationship with his blind date the next day on his social media. His girlfriend was the heiress of the Lamb Group.
We had met at a gathering before, so we had each other's number.
Her social media now featured an intimate photo of the two of them.

Gentleness is often the first impression people have of Edgar.
Including me, I liked him because of his gentleness.
Back then, when Dad's business was improving, our whole family moved to a villa district.
I tried hard to make friends with the kids around me, but they bullied me every time.
They threw stones at me and called me a nouveau riche.
I didn't dare tell my parents and could only endure their bullying time after time.
It was Edgar who stood in front of me with a stick, protecting me.
I will always remember his resolute back and the gentle smile on his face when he helped me up.
How could one not be charmed by such a bright and sunny young boy?
But I knew that I couldn't live in the past forever.
Edgar could be gentle with me, and he could be gentle with others too.
And I was just the most insignificant among them.
In countless days and nights, that gentle smile turned into ridicule and disdain towards me.
The boy's stick, in the end, swung towards me.
