There wasn't much to divide. Orion only wanted the house, while nearly all the other assets, cars, and company shares were transferred to Kira. As she packed her things and prepared to leave the home filled with their shared memories, Orion sat in the living room watching TV.
Kira only took her usual clothes. The matching cups, toothbrushes, pajamas, and all the other paired items they had bought together—she left them all behind.
In the large room, she managed to pack only two boxes. The movers hadn't arrived yet, so Kira struggled to push them from the bedroom to the living room. Orion didn't offer to help.
He just sat on the couch, smoking, as the living room filled with smoke. Kira's pharyngitis flared up, and she covered her mouth, coughing twice.
Just then, the doorbell rang, so she went straight to open the door. The mover apologized as soon as he walked in, "Sorry about that. This neighborhood is so big, I got lost..."
Kira waved it off, saying it was fine and not too late to start moving. The mover picked up a box and headed for the elevator, while Kira grabbed a bag and some smaller items and followed him down.
There wasn't much to move, and they finished in just two trips. On her final trip back upstairs to check for any forgotten items, Kira noticed that the TV in the living room was playing the video of her and Orion's wedding.
It was right at the part where she was putting the wedding ring on Orion's finger. This big man, standing in front of everyone, was filled with tears. With one hand holding the microphone and the other tightly gripping hers, his voice trembled with emotion as he said, "Sweetie, ever since I met you, I never once thought about being with anyone else."
Kira glanced up at the TV, her eyes casually brushing over Orion.
The man on the couch only showed the right side of his face, staring at the TV without looking at her, not even turning his head.
There was nothing left in this house that needed to be taken.
So she began to walk out. Just as she was about to step over the threshold, she suddenly heard Orion say, "I actually lied to you about what I said at the wedding."
She turned around and saw Orion looking at her. The curtains were open, and it was evening. Through the glass, she could see the crimson clouds on the horizon, and the setting sun cast its light on his face. The shadows on the floor stretched his figure long and thin. His face was covered in stubble, and his eyes were filled with despondency.
He continued, "I actually thought about breaking up with you. The night you gave me the 200 dollars for the doctor's visit, I was thinking, if I failed at this startup again, I was definitely going to break up with you. I couldn't keep dragging you down with me."
Kira looked down, not saying a word. After a long silence, she finally nodded politely, distantly, and said, "Hmm."
Then she opened the door and walked out, not looking back even once.
