Orion was in the bathroom taking a shower when her phone, which was in the living room, received several notifications. Kira picked it up to take a look.
It was Alfred sending messages about client handovers at the company. She wasn't too familiar with his business matters and was about to close the app when Orion's note for the receptionist Carina Frederick sent a notification about a returned transfer. She opened it and found that Carina had refunded the twenty thousand dollars Orion had transferred to her. Then more messages from Alfred came pouring in.
"Really, it's not necessary. Thank you, Mr. George. This was my choice."
"And I'm planning to resign tomorrow. Thank you for your care over the past two years."
She had some recollection of Carina, Orion had occasionally mentioned that the receptionist was a young woman from the countryside, where she was denied education due to her family's preference for boys, and who had run away to C City to avoid an arranged marriage.
At that time, Orion's company was considered a rising star in the industry, and the job advertisement clearly stated requirements such as presentable appearance, a college diploma or higher, and proficiency in computer operations and reception etiquette.
The HR department of their company had interviewed Carina and, during the report to Orion, casually mentioned that although Carina didn't meet the educational requirement, she learned things quickly.
Orion had discussed this with Kira, who felt sympathetic toward the girl, and Orion nodded in agreement, deciding to hire her right away.
It seemed that Carina was going to leave. Orion must have considered her difficult situation when giving her severance pay, Kira thought.
She had no objections to these matters at first, but after putting down the phone, she felt increasingly uneasy.
Orion didn't have the habit of deleting chat records, but the earliest record with Carina was the refund of the twenty thousand dollars. When she scrolled up further, there was nothing else.
And why not send the severance payment to her bank card? Shouldn't the finance department handle this?
Was it a voluntary resignation? So she didn't want the severance pay?
She put down the phone and went to the computer in the study.
She remembered that Orion often used the computer in the study for work, and his chat account was often logged in, so the chat records should be synchronized on that side.
As soon as Kira entered the study, she saw Orion's things scattered all over the desk—cups, phone chargers, and so on.
She sighed and tidied up the desk. Looking at the worn mouse pad, she remembered buying a few new ones and putting them in the computer cabinet, so she decided to replace it.
While looking for the mouse pad, she found a neatly wrapped small box in the innermost drawer of the desk. She opened it and found nothing inside except two hundred dollars lying quietly.
Kira looked at the two bills with a wry smile and carefully placed the box back in the drawer, thinking that she might be overly suspicious due to her recent pregnancy and hormonal changes.
Kira, of course, remembered the two hundred dollars. Every time they argued or when Orion got drunk, she would repeatedly mention this matter.
