When the plane landed, I found several missed calls on my phone.
There were 10 from Jair and 15 from Jorge.
I composed myself and was about to put my phone in my pocket when a call came in.
It was from Jair.
I accidentally pressed the answer button, and Jair's voice came through immediately.
"Monica! Something happened to Jorge!"
His voice was urgent, and he spoke quickly, as if afraid I would hang up. "He suddenly couldn't stand up last night. We took him to the hospital, and the doctors said his legs are severely atrophied, almost exactly like they were six years ago!"
I listened quietly without saying anything.
Jair paused. "Jorge's state is really off. He won't let anyone near him except for us to find you. Monica, where are you now?"
Not hearing my voice, Jair said softly, "Monica, don't be mad at Jorge right now. He really needs you now."
They all think I'm just being petulant with Jorge.
"Don't call me Sis anymore."
I said calmly, "I have nothing to do with him anymore."
"Monica..." Jair paused. "You're not serious, are you? He's..."
I interrupted him. "Since he needs me so much, I'll leave him with one last message."
"A miracle is sometimes fate. You have to accept the good and the bad."
After saying that, I hung up without paying attention to the shouts on the other end.
I put my phone away and stepped out of the airport.
Following the instructions in my mind, I walked straight to a pedestrian bridge.
A girl was squatting on the bridge, crying. She was looking at the calm lake below and taking steps toward the railing.
"The target has appeared."
The system reminded me, "Please prepare yourself. When the host and the target are both in a near-death state, their souls will switch. Please follow the instructions strictly."
I looked at the girl for a few seconds, thought for a moment, and then pulled out my phone to call Jorge.
In a few minutes, there might be no Monica in this world anymore.
I thought, I should say goodbye to the person who knows her best.
Thinking about it, that person is Jorge.
Then let's say goodbye.
The call was answered almost immediately. "Hello, Jorge."
"Monica..." His voice was so hoarse that I could hardly recognize it.
I was the first. "Mm, it's me." I smiled. "I heard about what happened to you from Jair. No matter what, I hope you can be strong."
My voice was gentle.
So gentle that I almost fooled myself, as if the person who made him this way wasn't me.
"When you get into the wheelchair, be careful. In the past, you'd often bump your knees by accident..."
"Make sure to cover up well when you sleep at night, and remember to get your massages on time.
"Don't eat too much seafood…"
I continued speaking slowly until I heard sobbing from the other end.
"Monica… I can't live without you."
Jorge said, "I beg you, come back to me?"
Now, he can remember all the good things about me.
"But I can't go back."
I said, "I have a place far, far away to go to."Jorge, don't forget me.
"I've been with you for sixteen years, and you have to remember me for the rest of your life."
After saying this, I reached out and placed the phone on the railing, then let go.
The phone splashed into the water, creating ripples.
The girl next to me climbed over the railing as well. Passersby noticed her, and more and more cars stopped. People tried to persuade her from a distance.
But the girl shook her head firmly and, amidst the shocked gazes of the crowd, leaped.
"Ahh! She jumped!"An auntie screamed.
"Everyone saw it! Stop shouting! Call an ambulance!"
"No!" The auntie slapped her thigh anxiously. "Another girl jumped too!"
"No!" The auntie slapped her thigh anxiously. "Another girl jumped too!"
