Lila seemed to be crying as she left.
The world fell silent once more with the faint sound of the door closing.
But I was still pressed against the door by Finley.
The darkness cast an indiscernible shadow over his eyes.
I felt a bit warm and shifted my neck.
"Mr. Hebert, it's very late, you must be tired."
I was so nervous that my words weren't coming out smoothly.
"There's no rush, I need to apply some ointment for you."
His low, restrained voice was particularly seductive in the dark.
Finley carried me and opened the bedroom door.
The wind blew against my back, which was soaked with sweat.
I shivered.
Finley brought the medical kit and squatted in front of me.
Under the dim light, his wedding ring flashed, making me feel a bit dazed.
Everything that happened tonight felt like a dream.
I couldn't help but recall the first time I met Finley.
During my freshman year, I won first prize in the city-wide essay competition.
The school organized an award ceremony.
The Hebert family sponsored many students, including myself.
So on that day, Finley, as a representative of the sponsor, was seated in the audience.
Luke, as my boyfriend, found my stutter embarrassing and left before the ceremony was halfway through.
Finley watched the entire ceremony without showing any change in expression.
My acceptance speech was, to say the least, disastrous.
My stutter had delayed the proceedings.
When Finley left, it started snowing heavily, and the car could barely move.
I heard that he missed an important meeting because of it.
The school teacher led me to apologize to Finley.
"Mr. Hebert, I'm sorry."
I was so cold that my lips were blue and my voice was trembling.
The black car window lowered a notch.
His gaze met mine through the swirling snow.
"It's okay, your work deserved first place."
"Poor weather has nothing to do with the students. Go back."
That was the only time during my student days that I received praise and care.
I felt deeply grateful to the Hebert family because of it.
"How are you?"
Finley's voice pulled me back from my memories.
He held my calf, and the moist ointment, rubbed between his fingers, created warmth.
I smiled. "Mr. Hebert, I will repay you properly."
After hearing this, Finley paused in his movements.
"Elise Rivera, since I was eighteen, the amount of money I use for charity each year reaches hundreds of millions."
"Do you think I need repayment?"
He raised his eyes, and his gaze was like a hook that captivated the soul.
"Or is your kindness to Luke a way to repay me?"
Caught off guard, I hastily changed the subject. "Then…what do you want?"
"What I want, you've already given me."
Luke's voice was calm and composed, yet determined. "The rest, I will have in the future."
