"My brother is on a business trip, let's stay here tonight."
Lila's quickened breathing could be heard.
"Luke… I can't breathe."
Luke's low laughter followed. "You'll get what's coming to you soon."
In the quiet, deserted night, I lay curled up in bed, listening to the sounds next door, finding it hard to breathe.
When Finley opened the bedroom door, my eyes were swollen from crying.
I looked at him through teary eyes. "Mr. Hebert, why did you come back early?"
He had his coat draped over his arm, as if he had walked straight from the front door.
He hadn't even had time to put his coat down.
He looked weary from travel.
There was a chill of the night on him.
"Why you crying?"
That cool tone unexpectedly gave me a great sense of security.
He removed his watch and leaned down to hold my chin. "This is your house, why didn't you ask them to leave?"
The warmth and roughness of his touch burned my skin.
My ears instantly turned red.
"He's your brother..."
Finley was willing to cure my stutter for Luke's sake.
What right did I have to kick his own brother out?
At that moment, strange sounds came from the next room.
Lila's voice was soft and intimate.
I wanted to get out of bed to find earplugs, but because I was in such a hurry, I tripped over a stool.
My knees hit the floor with a thud.
"Ahh..."
I cried out in pain.
The sounds next door stopped immediately.
Finley sighed and bent down to pick me up. "No need to rush."
He was about to carry me out of the bedroom when the door was knocked on.
Luke probed, "Brother... you brought someone home?"
The doorknob turned downward in the next second.
I was so nervous that I didn't dare to move.
In the critical moment, Finley calmly supported me, pressing my back against the door.
Frightened, I hurriedly wrapped my arms around his neck.
Hugging him tightly like a koala.
Warmth and coolness mingled as our bodies pressed together.
Lowering my gaze,
I saw a hint of lazy amusement reflected in his clear eyes.
His tie was crooked from my grip, revealing a small gap below his Adam's apple, enough to see his finely sculpted and tempting collarbone.
He was both restrained and alluring.
It was... quite improper.
"Mr. Hebert..."
My voice trembled.
Suddenly aware of how intimate the position was.
Finley suppressed the indiscernible emotion in his eyes. "Can you scream?"
I shook my head.
Outside the door, Luke sounded anxious. "Brother, open the door. Did you bring a woman home?"
Finley smiled at me, but his words lacked warmth. "Do I need to report to you when I'm dating?"
Clearly, he was accustomed to being in control.
Luke choked. "I thought I heard—"
"You must have misheard."
Finley traced the line of my waist, moving downward slowly.
In my increasingly rapid breathing, he whispered, "If you can't scream, then sing."
"Don't worry, your voice is beautiful."
This was the first time someone had complimented me.
I blushed fiercely, not knowing what came over me, and blurted out, "Row, Row, Row Your Boat..."
I sang half a line and then shut my mouth.
Because Finley's gaze towards me had changed.
"That line is hard to resist."
There was a teasing tone in his voice.
It was like a feather tickling my heart.
I kept my head down, not daring to look at him.
My face was hot and red.
Suddenly, it was quiet outside the door.
Luke's voice was shaking. "Brother, who is your girlfriend...?"
Finley clicked the lock on the door.
He said in an authoritative tone:
"Tonight is my wedding night with your sister-in-law."
"She doesn't like noise."
"So, take your woman and get out."
