Clearly, Annie had called the police.
As the car raced down the highway, we could hear the wailing of police sirens in the distance.
The driver’s expression changed instantly.
Asa calmly kissed the top of my head. "Don’t worry, we just need to lose them."
The driver gritted his teeth, not daring to dissuade Asa but feeling compelled to do so:
"Mr. Stout, this isn't F city.
If we commit a crime here, there’s no one to protect us."
Asa ignored him and held me tightly.
He caressed my face and whispered in my ear:
"Baby, I’m not like Walker.
You see, when he heard that Annie doesn’t love him, he was so devastated that he gave up right away.
"I’m different. Even if you don’t love me now, you will in the future."
"Even if you don’t, youll die with me."
He kissed me. "You promised to stay with me forever, right?"
There was a long silence in the car.
I said, "Asa, I did promise to stay with you forever.
But the condition was that you would marry me."
Asa’s body stiffened slightly.
Those were the early good days, very brief, so short that both of us were almost forgetting them.
Back then, I hadn’t realized I was a substitute and naively poured all my enthusiasm into Asa.
"Asa, my best friend bought a huge pink diamond, I love it so much. Can you use a pink diamond ring when you propose to me?
"Asa, I saw a little girl today who looks like a glutinous rice ball, isn’t she adorable? Should we have a daughter in the future?"
Asa held me by the waist and kissed me.
"Good. I’ll follow your wishes."
There are no more pure good times like that anymore.
In the car, I used my last bit of strength to kiss Asa:
"What do you say?
You retire from your criminal activities and marry me.
"Then I’ll keep my promise and stay with you forever."
When Annie found me, I was sitting in a small park filled with roses, lost in thought.
She ran up to me and hugged me, crying. "You scared me to death... If you died, I really wouldn’t know what to do..."
I pushed her away. "Scram, don’t think I didn’t hear that you considered leaving me for Walker."
Annie had cried enough and listened to me explain what had happened.
She widened her eyes, incredulous. "So Asa just let you go?"
I said, "Yes."
"Isn’t he insane? I thought he’d die before letting you go."
I smiled, the wind blowing past, leaving my heart empty. "I know Asa.
Even if he was willing to die with me, he wouldn’t marry me."
No one understands Asa‘s ambitions better than I do.
Asa is the illegitimate son of the Stout family.
More accurately, his mother was once his father’s secretary, and Asa was born as a result of rape.
But no one believed it.
Everyone cursed Asa’s mother, accusing the seductive female secretary of trying to climb the social ladder by getting pregnant.
In the midst of endless disdain, Asa's mother died early.
Asa was only seven or eight years old at the time.
He bowed at his mother's grave, and from then on, his life goal was to climb up the social ladder at any cost.
Despite his unclean origins, given his current wealth and power, there were plenty of wealthy heiresses willing to enter into a marriage alliance with him.
I was just reminding him that he was causing such a stir for me.
Was he willing to throw away the previous ten years of hard work?
"He didn't let me go, he let himself go."
I said softly to Annie.
