"Hello... Is this Mr. Lin?"
I was startled by the anger in Walker's voice.
But I immediately held the phone and anxiously said, "I'm Annie's friend. Annie is in the hospital now, and she's not doing well. Can you come quickly?"
On the other end, Walker was silent.
He said, "What trick is she playing now?"
I became even more anxious. "What are you talking about? Annie just got into a car accident, and her condition is very critical..."
"Enough." Walker said coldly. "She's played this game many times before.
Every time she makes a mistake, she either pretends to be sick or injures herself to make me feel sorry for her.
This time, did she cause such a big mess that she even staged a car accident?
Please tell her that if she's injured, she should go see a doctor. I'm not a doctor."
"Walker..." I shouted.
But it was useless.
The call was disconnected.
Walker threw his phone aside and remained silent for a long time.
Maya asked understandingly, "Did something happen to Mrs. Lin? Why don't you go see her? I'm fine."
Walker rubbed his temples irritably. "Don't worry about her."
Maya bit her lip and said considerately, "Mrs. Lin must be very scared right now.
She just wants to see you. You're married, there's nothing you can't resolve together..."
The more she tried to persuade him, the colder Walker's expression became.
"Maya, don't worry." He said. "I won't favor her just because she's my wife.
I will certainly give you justice in this matter."
Tears welled in Maya's eyes, threatening to fall. "Mr. Lin, you're so kind."
"Mr. Lin, are we going to B Hospital?" the driver asked.
B Hospital was a private hospital jointly built by the Petty and Petty families.
Walker said coldly, "No, go to the C Hospital."
Maya could tell that Walker was avoiding meeting Annie. Annie was at B Hospital, and Walker preferred to change hospitals rather than visit her on the way.
She lowered her head and smiled silently.
Walker took Maya to the C Hospital.
The doctors, after examining her, said that apart from a few external injuries, Maya had no serious problems.
But her mental state seemed to have suffered a great shock, she would wake up crying shortly after falling asleep.
Maya, tears streaming down her face, said to Walker, "Mr. Lin, you go ahead and take care of your work. Don't worry about me."
Walker, who had wavered about whether to see Annie, decided to stay after seeing Maya's pitiful expression.
Maya's condition stabilized two days later.
When Walker left the hospital, he finally opened his private phone.
He thought there would be dozens of messages and missed calls from Annie.
But this time, it was empty, with nothing.
Walker felt a strange sensation, one he had never experienced before.
He had never felt this before.
Walker wanted to calm this feeling.
But after staying in his office for a long time, he couldn't resist and called me.
"Where's Annie?" Walker asked me coldly. "Put her on the phone."
I was silent for a long time.
"I know you're Annie's friend." Walker was already impatient. "Have Annie come see me immediately..."
"Annie is dead." I said softly.
There was a long silence on the other end.
After a moment, I heard Walker chuckle derisively.
"Don't play these games with me anymore."
His voice then became serious.
"Tell her, I've calmed Maya down. She's agreed not to report this and not to tell anyone about it.
"Annie doesn't need to hide anymore. Have her come see me!"
I said nothing more, but slowly gave him an address.
"If you want to see her so badly, come find her here."
