In the end, Mark couldn't bear it.
He was borrowing money everywhere.
When he came to my house with a dejected look, I asked him how much he had borrowed.
"100,000 dollars."
For one million yuan, that was just a drop in the bucket.
I couldn't lend him money, but I pointed out, "You're not just a brother, you're also a husband and a father."
In that moment, Mark seemed to have aged significantly.
Tiffany's deeds spread quickly throughout the neighborhood.
Along with it were photos of her infidelity.
Now, their family was being shunned like rats on the street.
Mark stopped going to work to try to raise money for Tiffany.
His wife couldn't stand it, and they fought every day at home.
The children were sent back home by their teachers.
"Wait until you've sorted out your domestic affairs before sending them back."
The school was near the neighborhood, and their family's problems were known to everyone.
The children were ridiculed by classmates, who called their aunt indecent and accused them of not being good either.
The children fought back out of anger.
A week later, Mark's wife returned to work.
She told me that Tiffany had left with that man, and the kid were left with them.
"Can't even raise two children, now we have to raise three." She scolded Tiffany thoroughly, "But it also gave Mark something to remember her by, and he's slowly moving on from that."
Since then, I haven't cared about Tiffany anymore.
I thought we wouldn't cross paths again.
Three months later.
My husband and I went to H City to make up for our honeymoon.
In the hotel lobby, I heard Tiffany's name.
"One thousand."
"Five hundred."
"Eight hundred."
She was facing away from me, bargaining with a man who looked to be in his fifties.
The man had a lecherous smile, and his hands roamed over her body improperly.
Eventually, the two seemed to have agreed on a price and embraced each other as they entered the elevator.
The moment the elevator doors closed,
Our eyes met. She was wearing heavy makeup, but the bruise on the corner of her eye was still visible.
Upon seeing me, she was as calm as a stranger.
Jayson patted my shoulder. "What were you looking at? I called you a few times and you didn't respond."
"Do you believe in karma?"
I said out of the blue, hooking my arm around his, and Jayson actually thought about it seriously.
"Yes."
"Hmm, I believe in it too."
