After Tiffany left, my mother-in-law apologized to me, holding my hand with regret.
She said she had misjudged people and made me suffer.
I comforted her with a smile. "You did what a godmother should do. Don't burden yourself with the mistakes of bad people."
Ironically, the bad person didn't even think they were wrong.
Our family returned to normal life.
Mama felt guilty towards me and treated me even better than before.
One day, while I was at work, Tiffany's sister-in-law received a call and left in a panic.
That evening, when I got home, I learned from my mother-in-law that their front door had been splashed with paint.
"Did you find out who did it?"
"No, we checked the surveillance footage with the property management, but the cameras happened to be broken these past few days, so nothing was recorded."
I scooped a spoonful of ice cream into my mouth, deep in thought.
Mama was still lamenting.
The doorbell rang.
To our surprise, it was Tiffany and Mark at the door.
They looked like they had just had a very intense argument.
"Godmother, save me."
Tiffany looked at my mom as if she were her savior.
Yet mama stepped aside to avoid her.
"I told you to call the police. What are you doing at here? Come with me."
"I won't go, we can't call the police."
Mama and I were utterly confused.
The commotion was so loud that neighbors poked their heads out to see what was happening.
My mother-in-law, helpless, invited them in.
From Mark, we learned the whole story.
The one who splashed paint on their door was Tiffany's husband. Mark wanted to call the police, but Tiffany refused and wouldn't explain why. She even ran away.
"If you tell me, I can try to help you. But if you don't, I have to call the police today."
Mark was firm in his stance.
I tried to listen to Tiffany's thoughts.
Oh no.
I couldn't hear anything.
Tiffany refused to speak, and the siblings remained at an impasse.
I yawned out of boredom. "I'll call the police."
I had dialed the number and placed my finger on the call button.
Only then did Tiffany reluctantly speak up.
Next, I heard a story that shattered all norms.
Tiffany dated a much older boyfriend in college and spent a lot of his money.
After graduation, she wanted to dump him because he was too old, but unfortunately, he was a tough nut to crack, and she ended up marrying him under pressure.
After marriage, she was still unfaithful, cheating with a fake millionaire and trying to use a child to improve her status.
In the end, she was swindled out of both money and affection.
It was her who cheated during the marriage first, and she didn't dare to make a big fuss about it. She planned to secretly terminate the pregnancy and pretend nothing had happened.
Unfortunately, her luck wasn't great, and her husband discovered her plans on the day she went to the hospital. She never found an opportunity to carry out her plan until the baby was born.
In the end, the truth came out due to the issue with the baby's blood type.
The man kept her imprisoned at home and beat her three times a day.
Tiffany wanted a divorce, but her husband demanded compensation for the money he had spent on her.
One million was a staggering amount for Tiffany, who had never worked. In the midst of the domestic violence, she found an opportunity to escape.
"You, you're really going to make me die of anger."
Mark's anger surged, and he slapped Tiffany hard across the face.
"As long as I give him one million, he'll divorce me and let me go."
Tiffany crawled back on her hands and knees to grab onto Mark's clothing, but he kicked her away.
"Where am I supposed to find one million for you?"
I knew a bit about Mark's family situation.
His parents both died from serious illnesses, and at the time, they sold their only house to pay for their medical treatments.
They were currently renting their home.
Tiffany knelt on the ground, her gaze blank.
When she had nowhere else to turn, she thought of my mom. "Godmother, you have to save me. I know your family is wealthy. If necessary, sell your house. When I get divorced, I'll find a way to repay you."
I was so shocked I couldn't close my mouth.
What face?
Why should our family sell our house because of your mistakes?
I started laughing after getting angry.
A thought suddenly struck me.
"Crazy, everyone's crazy."
My mother-in-law kept her distance, looking at her as if she had seen a ghost.
I asked the question on my mind. "So you tried to seduce my husband to make him pay off the one million for you."
Tiffany neither confirmed nor denied it.
Mama was so angry she nearly fainted.
Initially, she tolerated her presence out of respect for Mark.
Now, she couldn't bear to see Tiffany for another minute. She grabbed a mop from the bathroom and without a word, chased both siblings out.
"Truly despicable. If you ever come to my house again, I'll beat you every time I see you."
Even after they had gone far away, mom was still venting her anger.
