Time passed swiftly.
On the day our company, which Claire and I founded, went public, I saw the news.
Asia stabbed Cayden outside the Daugherty Corporation building.
Claire was by my side, and she saw the news as well.
According to the news, Asia had been arrested by the police, and Cayden was undergoing emergency treatment, his fate uncertain.
Claire glanced at the news and then looked away.
I teased her. "You’re not even asking if I’m worried about Cayden?"
She said, "You’re not worried."
"But he loved me deeply later on, didn’t he?"
Claire said expressionlessly, "Destiney, in this life, I’d rather you take money from loan sharks than love from a bad person."
"Also, let me take another look at your script for the media conference. I think there are six issues with your phrasing."
"Alright, class monitor."
The world’s largest industry summit was about to begin, and under the lights, the host was reading an exciting opening statement.
And Claire and I, as the youngest and most prominent successful female entrepreneurs, were about to take the stage.
Countless flashbulbs were about to light up for us.
Countless lenses were about to focus on us.
Claire was dressed in a snow-white suit, looking cool, capable, and outstanding.
The weed that grew quietly during adolescence had finally become a pine tree standing tall amidst the snowstorm.
And I was dressed in a black silk gown, elegant and graceful, with a subtle shimmer.
Having endured the long night, we were finally able to see the stars.
"Claire, are you nervous?"
"Forget it, artificial intelligence doesn’t get nervous. I shouldn’t have asked!"
Silence.
After a moment, Claire took my hand and passed the warmth of her palm to me:
"Destiney, don’t be nervous."
The curtains opened.
Our names appeared on the giant LED screen.
Claire and I walked onto the stage together, greeted by thunderous applause.
Later, the company Claire and I founded continued to grow.
Cayden didn’t die. He suffered serious injuries, but after emergency treatment, he survived.
It’s good that someone should live to pay the debts of the sins committed by the Daugherty Corporation.
Asia was imprisoned.
From prison, she wrote to me, saying that if she ever had the chance to be released, she hoped to return to the orphanage and work as a volunteer to care for the children.
She said she hoped to spend the rest of her life making amends to me.
In the end of her letter, she called me sister.
I felt complicated and put the letters away.
Many of the children from the orphanage gathered around me. "Destiney, what are you looking at?"
I shook my head. "Nothing." Today, Claire and I came to the orphanage and met with the director.
We would establish a charitable fund in the name of our company to help children who aren’t adopted and to provide ongoing support to those who have been adopted but face difficulties.
The sun was bright, and the weather was clear.
We finally stepped into the future we had been looking forward to.
