"It's nothing! I probably just didn't sleep well," Sidney explained, but her eyes betrayed her panic.
Jayson sat there, watching her figure as she went into the kitchen. She wanted to play it cool, and he could only go along with it.
The food was reheated and brought back to the table. The two of them quietly finished it. He took out the newspaper and started reading slowly. While Sidney was cleaning up the dishes, she asked, "Aren't you going to work today?"
"I can go to the office later today," he replied, flipping through the financial section, as usual.
Sidney tossed the bowl into the dishwasher, then watched as the butler left to buy groceries. She sat down in the seat next to him.
"Tomorrow's ribbon-cutting ceremony will have a lot of media there. Are you ready?"
Sidney nodded. In reality, it was just about picking out the clothes and jewelry, playing the role of a proper supporting figure.
"Some reporters might be curious about you appearing in front of the media and may want to interview you. I believe you'll handle it well."
Sidney pursed her lips and lowered her head, appearing indifferent.
The space was filled only with the sound of their breathing and the ticking of the clock.
After a long silence, she finally spoke. "I saw it."
Jayson didn't even look up from the newspaper, casually asking, "What did you see?"
"I saw someone being dragged out of the private room, bloodied and beaten, and then... you all coming out of there," Sidney said, her gaze fixed on a spot on the newspaper.
Jayson was silent for a long time before slowly saying, "Sometimes, when people don't keep their word, they must be punished."
Sidney was stunned by his response, unable to speak for a long time.
Jayson looked up and saw her, shocked and staring at him.
Sidney frowned and said, "If someone doesn't keep their word, they should be penalized according to the breach of contract. Why did you have to hurt him like that?"
"Some things can't be solved just by a contract."
"… Don't you dislike being called part of the underworld? But what you've done is exactly what they would do."
"Don't speak as if you're so righteous. You don't understand my life." Jayson was clearly irritated by her last words and was in a bad mood.
"I'm stating the facts. What normal person would act like this?"
"Which of your eyes saw me hurt someone?"
"I've seen bloodstains on your clothes several times."
"So just because there's blood on my clothes, you think I hurt someone? Did you see it with your own eyes?"
"I didn't see it."
"Then you're slandering me." With that, Jayson dropped the newspaper, and walked out.
Sidney sat there alone, her mind racing. She had never seen him hurt anyone with her own eyes. She had only made assumptions and then accused him of it.
Jayson was gone for a while before she finally picked up her phone to call him.
The phone rang for a long time before he picked up. His voice was cold, still upset.
"Hello?"
"Are you angry?"
"How can I not be angry after being slandered? Why do you have to think so badly of me? Do you really believe I hurt someone? Is that how you see me?"
"…I'm sorry. I just saw you both come out of a room…"
"Why didn't you ask me what happened first? You're making me out to be such a bad person! I'm really angry!"
"I've already apologized."
"I accept."
"Then don't be angry anymore."
"I need to calm down for a bit. Let's leave it for now. Goodbye."
