Sidney's life now was very fulfilling. Besides helping out with the housework, Jayson began taking her to various gatherings. At these parties, she met many other ladies who, like her, were there as arm candy. Some of them had already formed tight-knit circles of friends. When they saw Sidney, a fresh face, they were both curious and eager to test her, so they deliberately struck up conversations with her. Sidney was never particularly talkative, but Jayson had told her in advance to be polite with the other ladies. They were influential and could easily whisper into the ears of powerful people, so it was important to handle them carefully.
Sidney exchanged a few words with them. They managed to dig a little into her background and learned that she was the youngest daughter of the Calderon family.
"Aren't the Calderon family on the verge of collapsing? I still have stocks in your family's company!"
"Does your husband help out the Calderon family? He's not letting it collapse, right?"
Sidney had anticipated they'd bring up those questions, so she politely shook her head and said, "I don't handle the business side of things, so I'm not sure."
The others quickly began chattering about how she should learn more about business matters, so she could help her husband and also protect the Calderon family.
Sidney was beginning to understand the mindset of these ladies. None of them were genuinely concerned about her. They only pretended to care with their words, but in private, they spread gossip. So, she simply smiled and remained silent, as that was the best response.
Seeing that she was easygoing and harmless, the ladies, knowing that her husband was Jayson—whose career and connections were at the peak in B City—invited her to join them for afternoon tea next time. They exchanged phone numbers.
Though Sidney didn't really want to exchange numbers, she reluctantly added them one by one, addressing them all as "Mrs. XX from XX Company" to prepare herself mentally when answering the phone.
After gossiping about each other's latest happenings, the ladies began comparing their outfits. Sidney was grateful that she had grown during this period and hadn't embarrassed Jayson. She was slim, and over time, Jayson had insisted that no matter whether she sat or stood, her back should always be straight to appear more dignified. Recently, she had bought a winter collection from Jayson's usual tailor-made brand's women's department. She was currently wearing one of those outfits, although she didn't know how much it cost because the store charged Jayson's account directly. She and the store manager had carefully matched accessories to the outfits, and then arranged for them to be sent home.
At that moment, one of the ladies, who seemed to be about Sidney's age, was particularly friendly and complimented Sidney on how well she had coordinated her outfit's colors and style. Sidney politely replied that she wasn't really knowledgeable about fashion, just picked colors that were similar. The other ladies assumed she was being modest and added that she was being too humble. They invited her to go shopping with them next time.
After chatting for a while, the ladies finished talking, and the gathering was almost over. They each said their goodbyes and returned to their partners. When Jayson saw Sidney coming back, he apologized to the man beside him and took her to a quieter area.
"How did it go with the ladies?"
"Tiring," Sidney said, leaning gently against him, trying to relieve the pressure from her three-inch heels.
"This is how socializing works in this circle. You'll have to get used to it."
"They invited me to go shopping and have tea next time."
"You can go with them."
"I'm not close with them," Sidney said. She felt awkward about shopping and having tea with people she had barely met. She didn't actually enjoy it, but she still patiently went along with it to help Jayson and meet his expectations.
"Socializing doesn't mean you have to bare your soul to them. Just be friendly. When others are gossiping, smile and play dumb. Don't agree with them."
