Since Basil was the soul of the set and couldn't leave, Cierra ended up taking an ambulance to the emergency room, accompanied by Darnell.
"I saw everything. Lettie tripped you on purpose, didn't she?" Darnell looked at Cierra with concern as she lay on the stretcher.
Although the medical staff had already treated her, Cierra was still in too much pain to speak. Darnell tried to comfort her, "I know it hurts. Just listen to me. Didn't you say you were a supporting character when you got drunk at my house?"
Cierra blinked, trying to wipe away the cold sweat that had dripped into her eyes. Darnell mistook this as a response and continued, "I told you that night, even though everyone is a supporting character in someone else's story, that doesn't stop you from using your own efforts to step over others' corpses... Oh no, I mean using their bodies as stepping stones to rise up and become the main character in someone else's life. Do you understand what I'm saying?"
Cierra shook her head. Darnell's words sounded too much like a riddle or a motto printed on a small card. She thought she needed more time to understand.
"Are you stupid? You usually seem so smart," Darnell turned and asked the medical staff, "Should we also check if her brain was hurt? How did she suddenly become so dumb?"
Cierra had the urge to punch him. If her wrist wasn't injured, she would have jumped up and strangled Darnell by now. How could everyone think she was stupid? Before she transmigrated, she was nearly honored as the top student in her entire school!
The medical staff nodded expressionlessly, and Darnell finally relaxed and leaned down to whisper in Cierra's ear, "I don't like Lettie, and it looks like she doesn't like you either. You're like a big, clumsy stumbling block on her road to success—"
What is he talking about? Big and clumsy? Couldn't Darnell use a better adjective? The hateful part was that she was biting her lip so hard to endure the pain that she could only make muffled sounds in protest.
"What? You agree?"
Nonsense! Someone come and help me knock this self-talking guy out!
"I think you're a naive and kind woman, but in this dog-eat-dog world, being naive and kind won't bring you happiness. Like this time, if you continue to be kind, you'll only fuel Lettie's arrogance and make her want to bully you more, either secretly or openly. What are you going to do? So I say, kid, as long as you're not stupid, you'll understand that it's important to be a little cunning when necessary."
Why is he hinting that she's stupid again? Cierra groaned incoherently, unable to form a sentence.
"Since you agree, let's make a plan. How about we form an alliance?" Darnell raised his eyebrows triumphantly. "I think her private life isn't very decent. I can tell from her eyes that she's up to no good. I'm worried about Basil. Basil is so pure and dedicated...(Darnell continued to list about twenty of Basil's virtues, which is omitted here). I can't imagine what would happen if he fell into that witch's hands."
Cierra suddenly calmed down from her agitation. It turned out that Darnell had the same thoughts as her. She suddenly felt she could forgive his earlier annoying remarks.
"So, do you agree to form an alliance with me?" Darnell asked again.
Cierra nodded earnestly twice, but after agreeing, she suddenly remembered that Basil had entrusted her to be his relationship manager, tasked with facilitating the romance between him and Lettie. What was she supposed to do now?
She had already signed the contract, and now she had agreed to form an alliance with Darnell. Wasn't this a breach of professional ethics?
If Basil were to find out, would he demand a hefty compensation for breach of contract?
There's no way the company would agree to cover this breach of contract fee for her, sniff, what am I going to do?!
She suddenly felt incredibly foolish and naive. Could it be, just as Darnell had suggested, that she had actually bumped her head and didn't realize it?
"You're worried Basil will find out?" Darnell gently patted her head and brushed her sweaty bangs aside. "Don't worry, You big brother will take care of you."
His solemn promise only made Cierra feel unreliable. Why did the word "big brother" sound so grating? She suddenly thought of the two sleazy men in the nightclub that night. Her head, which had been throbbing with pain, suddenly cooled down.
However, Darnell didn't notice these changes in Cierra's mood. In fact, he didn't necessarily need Cierra's help to successfully drive a wedge between Basil and Lettie. Isn't there a profession called a private investigator in this society? He simply felt that Cierra and Basil should be brought together. He had a hunch that this woman was perfectly suited for Basil. It didn't matter if she was a main character or a supporting one; the one who successfully rose to the top was the final winner. He believed in her!
"It's settled then. Since you can't use your hands and feet now, it's not convenient to high-five to seal the deal. How about we make a blood pact?" He looked at her scraped, bleeding knee.
Cierra rolled her eyes, convinced she had met a drama queen. This guy must be crazy. If he loved acting so much, why didn't he become a makeup artist?
