The waiter brought the dishes, and Mikayla breathed a sigh of relief. She quickly called the two of them, "Let's eat first."
Watching Cayden constantly serve Mikayla food, Alina's expression softened slightly. She suddenly asked, "Did you have a wedding?"
Mikayla shook her head. Alina stared at Cayden, who simply smiled and looked at Mikayla's slightly flushed cheeks. "I follow her lead."
Alina nodded. "That's better."
Throughout the meal, Alina subtly probed Cayden, but his answers were impeccable. When Cayden went to pay the bill, Mikayla pulled her sister aside and whispered, "Sis, you're being too obvious."
Alina shrugged nonchalantly. She turned and seriously told Mikayla, "I need to make sure he treats you well. Only then can I be at ease."
"He's from a wealthy family. What if he bullies you? I have to show him that you have support behind you."
Mikayla hugged her tightly. "Sis, you're the only one who loves me."
Alina smiled and patted her head. "He did okay. He passed the first test."
"By the way, Dad hopes you can bring him home next week." Alina motioned towards Cayden. "It's getting late. I'll head off first."
After seeing Alina off, Mikayla lingered at the door. Cayden walked over, took her hand, and headed to the parking lot.
"What's wrong?"Cayden noticed Mikayla's troubled expression.
"Um... Can you come home with me next week?"
"Okay." Cayden agreed, but she still looked conflicted.
"By the way, you and your sister are quite different in personality."
Mikayla smiled silently. "She's more assertive, right? Actually, we didn't exactly grow up together."
Cayden was about to start the car but stopped. This was the first time Mikayla talked about her past, and he listened intently.
"When I was five, my mom and dad divorced. I stayed with my mom, and my dad took Alina."
Remembering something, tears welled up in Mikayla's eyes. She looked at the plane trees outside the window. "In the second year of junior high, my mom got sick and passed away... Later, my dad took me in. He had a new family, but I couldn't fit in. I have a younger brother, and my dad and stepmother focused all their attention on him."
Mikayla paused. "And my sister, she was always excellent, like the perfect child, never causing any worries. She excelled academically, went to the best schools, and now has a successful career."
"I was caught in the middle, feeling ordinary compared to them. Every stage of my life seemed average, not outstanding or remarkable..."
Mikayla let out a self-deprecating laugh. "Eventually, I figured it out. After starting work, I didn't ask them for any money. I rented a place and lived my own life. It's fine to lay low. Someone has to be the NPC of this world, right? Living happily every day is already quite an achievement, isn't it?"
She turned and smiled at Cayden. He suddenly leaned over and hugged her. "Yes, you've done amazingly."
Mikayla was taken aback. He continued, "And now you have me."
Her calm heart was stirred like a stone thrown into a pond, creating ripples. She hesitated. "That... remains to be seen."
Cayden chuckled and planted a kiss on her cheek. "Let's go home."
"Alright."
It was a home belonging solely to the two of them.
