"Mikayla, come sit here," Cassius, dressed in a gray suit, beckoned her over.
Mikayla couldn't believe her eyes. Cassius "kindly" moved over to make space for her, placing her between him and Cayden.
"Why are you here?"
"What? You're allowed to know the groom, but I'm not allowed to know the bride?"
"Then why are you sitting here?"
"The view from here is great. I wanted to make sure you didn't miss the show." He leaned back slightly, a smirk playing on his lips.
Mikayla noticed Cayden's face darkening even more. Without a word, he subtly moved Mikayla's chair closer to his.
An awkward silence filled the air, with no one speaking. Finally, the food arrived. Mikayla focused on eating, only to find both people beside her placing food in her bowl simultaneously.
"Mikayla works so hard at her company. She needs to eat more vegetables to get her vitamins," Cassius said.
Glancing at the meat in her bowl, Cassius added, "This synthetic meat isn't very nutritious. As a doctor, I have some authority on this."
Cayden put down his chopsticks, glaring at Cassius. "Don't you think you're overstepping?"
"I'm just looking out for a good friend, worried she might be overworked at your company." Cassius feigned a wounded expression. "Mikayla, is your husband upset because I said that?"
Mikayla chose to eat only the food she had picked for herself.
Suddenly, the lights dimmed, and the host took the stage. "Good evening, dear friends. It's a pleasure to witness this engagement ceremony together. Let's give a warm round of applause for the happy couple!"
Elegant, romantic music began to play as the groom led the bride down a flower-strewn red carpet. Mikayla's eyes widened; she recognized the bride from the garden earlier. Her makeup was flawless, and she wore a faint smile that didn't reach her eyes.
Mikayla scrutinized her, feeling an inexplicable sense of familiarity.
The usual ceremony proceeded, but as the couple exchanged rings, an unexpected guest stormed in.
"Miley!"
All eyes turned to the man exuding a menacing aura as he strode towards the bride, grabbing her arm forcefully. "Come with me," he commanded.
Mikayla's eyes widened further. Wasn't this Marcus? Cayden also frowned, watching the scene unfold. Cassius, however, remained indifferent, cutting his steak with precision.
"Who are you?" the groom stepped in front of Miley. "Security! Remove unrelated person!"
"An outsider?" Marcus laughed coldly. "Ask Miley who I am," he challenged, his expression stormy and threatening.
Miley's tears streamed down her face as she choked out, "Marcus, let me go! How many times do I have to tell you before you let me go?"
"Miley, try marrying another man, I dare you!"
Mikayla thought something was amiss: wasn't Marcus supposed to be dating Elliana? How did he get involved with the bride?
As the crowd remained confused, a striking woman in a black dress and red velvet heels entered. With her black curls and bold red lipstick, she instantly drew all eyes. Elliana, looking fierce, walked up to Marcus and slapped him hard.
