How many years had it been since she last saw him? Mikayla herself didn't know. She stood there, staring at him, completely at a loss, until Linda broke the silence, "Cassius?"
Cassius, hanging up a bag of saline, said as he worked, "I saw your name on the hospital admission list and thought it might be someone with the same name. But it really is you."
He turned his head and gave Mikayla a meaningful look, "An old classmate meeting after so many years—Mclean, don't tell me you've forgotten me?"
The atmosphere in the room grew tense. Mikayla forced a stiff smile, "Long time no see, Cassius."
Cayden, standing behind Mikayla, tightened his grip on her cold hand. Cassius quickly noticed their linked hands.
"Your boyfriend? Aren't you going to introduce us?"
Mikayla coldly replied, "This is my husband."
Having lived together for so long, this was the first time Cayden heard her use that term. It made his heart skip a beat.
"You're married?" Cassius's brows furrowed as he shot a displeased look at Cayden. He then sneered, "So you forgot your old feelings and didn't even invite me to your wedding."
"We weren't that close," Mikayla snapped back. Linda hurriedly tried to defuse the situation, "Alright, alright, Dr. Oneill, have you finished?"
"Hmph, you seem so reluctant to see me; I'm afraid I can't oblige your wish." Cassius waved at them as he turned to leave, "See you later." It's unclear who this remark was intended for.
Before leaving, Cassius cast a hostile glance at Cayden, setting off alarm bells in his mind. He could sense that there was more to their history than met the eye.
Mikayla stayed with Linda in the hospital for a while longer, "Get some rest. I'll be here with you for the next few days."
Linda hugged her tightly, "Thank you, my angel."
As night fell and the city lights began to twinkle, Mikayla and Cayden left the hospital. On the way back, Mikayla gazed out the window, a hint of melancholy in her eyes.
"Mikayla.""Mikayla." Cayden called her name twice before she turned her head, looking puzzled.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing, you just seemed a bit down."
"The doctor we met today, is he an old classmate of yours?" Cayden asked nonchalantly, his long fingers tapping on the steering wheel.
Mikayla absently replied, "Hmm," then after a moment of silence, she added, "He's my ex-boyfriend."
"Does he have a brother named Marcus?"
Mikayla thought for a moment, "Yes, how did you…" Then she remembered Cayden's connections, "You must know him."
The Oneill family's H company was a leading company in A City's medical industry, currently headed by Marcus.
"I've met him a few times at dinner events. I only heard that the Oneill family's second son became a doctor. Didn't expect to meet him like this."
Mikayla sighed. She hadn't expected to reunite with Cassius either.
Stars twinkled in the night sky. Even as she lay in bed, Mikayla's mind was in turmoil, unable to fall asleep.
In the study, Cayden took out their marriage certificate from a drawer, tracing Mikayla's name with his fingers. He knew that marriage was the only thing keeping her by his side, but he was determined to find a way to make her stay.
Meanwhile, in the on-call room, Cassius dug out old photos from years ago. Looking at the picture of the two of them smiling foolishly with their heads together, he couldn't help but smile and set the photo as his phone's wallpaper.
Tonight, it seemed, would be a sleepless night for them all.
