Chapter 17

　　The innocent voice pierced Xavier's ears, stirring an inexplicable sense of familiarity amidst his shock. "What! I'm your dad?"
　　Alison, both guilty and panicked, scooped Leo up quickly. "Leo, what are you talking about? He’s not your dad!"
　　Leo, even more confused, asked, "Mom, you said you were bringing me here to find Dad. If the person standing next to you isn’t Dad, then who is he?"
　　Xavier listened to Leo’s words, wondering who Leo’s father was as well. He knelt down to Leo's level and asked, "Leo, how old are you now?"
　　Leo turned to look at the crouching Xavier and held up four fingers. "I'm four years old."
　　Four years old! The realization hit Xavier like a lightning bolt. It had been five years since Alison disappeared. Could Leo be his son?
　　He immediately looked up at Alison.
　　Caught in his intense, piercing gaze, Alison felt her heart racing. She turned her head, avoiding his unwavering eyes, and walked forward hurriedly, pulling Leo along. "Leo, he is not your dad!"
　　Leo looked at Alison, asking, "Mom, then when will you take me to find Dad?" His small hand held hers, his voice innocent and pleading.
　　Alison's expression was awkward, her feelings a mix of distress and helplessness. "Leo, once Mom finishes her work, I will take you to find Dad, okay?"
　　But Leo continued to fuss. Lane walked over and said to him, "Leo, aren't you the best behaved child?"
　　Leo looked at Lane. "Uncle, I want to see Dad."
　　Lane smiled at Leo. "Alright, if you become the best boy in the world, Uncle and Mom will definitely take you to find Dad, okay? But you have to let Mom finish her work first."
　　Leo seemed convinced by Lane’s words and said, "Uncle, you can’t lie to me."
　　Lane laughed, "Uncle would never lie to you. Now, let’s let Mom finish her work, okay?"
　　Leo finally nodded and said, "Okay."
　　As Lane took Leo away, Xavier immediately stepped in front of Alison, looking at her silently. "It seems we have a lot to talk about."
　　Alison's heart pounded as she stared at him in a panic, whispering, "What?"
