Chapter 14

　　After five long years, the distance between them had only grown. Could she ever catch up to him?
　　Xavier, suddenly jolted, questioned her harshly, "You got married! How could you get married?"
　　Alison could hear the anger in his voice. If she hadn’t been hunted five years ago, if she hadn’t gone to Rome, would he have married her for the baby’s sake?
　　Staring at his angry face, Alison wondered how to respond. Then, she decided on a different approach. "I didn’t get married, but I..."
　　Xavier, now more anxious than ever, pressed her, "But what?"
　　Alison thought to herself, Whatever, I'll just pull Lane into this and explain later if it comes to that. "I have a boyfriend right now," she said, quickly freeing her hands from his loosened grip. "So it’s inappropriate for you to hold my hand."
　　Xavier stared at the table where her hands had been, his mind in turmoil. He needed to know, "Are you saying you have a boyfriend?"
　　Alison nodded deliberately. "Yes, so we must keep our distance. Please sign the contract quickly."
　　Xavier's thoughts weren’t on the contract at all. He was consumed with questions about her boyfriend. She was finally back, after all this time. He had waited for this day for so long, convinced she wasn’t dead. He had so much to tell her about his feelings over these years, and now, she had a boyfriend?
　　"Can you tell me about your boyfriend? I want to know if he treats you well. Do you truly love him?" Xavier asked, hoping that as long as she wasn’t married, he still had a chance. At the very least, he needed to know his competition.
　　Alison glanced at him and said, "My boyfriend is Lane."
　　Xavier found the name familiar. His mind raced, recalling the details about Evokx Future Group he had reviewed on the way here. Lane was the heir to Evokx Future Group, and Alison was his half-sister.
　　Alison, are you testing me? You’re really pulling this stunt? Fine, I’ll play along.
　　"Alison, as long as you’re not married, I still have a chance. Let’s arrange a meeting. I want to see him," Xavier said, testing the waters.
