In fact, ever since he witnessed that scene on the street, his love for Livia had long since faded away. He had wanted to take revenge on her, but her death rendered his vengeance meaningless. Looking at Alison now, he found it almost laughable. She naively believed he still deeply loved her beloved sister Livia!
Or perhaps Livia was exceedingly skilled at concealing her true nature—her vanity, her thirst for novelty, discarding the old for the new. She wielded her beauty and sensuality, that alluring smile, as weapons in the realm of men, that even her sister was unaware of her other side.
Xavier glanced at Alison, unwilling to answer her question directly. Instead, he said, "I want to know your name."
Alison was momentarily stunned, "You want to know my name?"
His question made her even more flustered. She had never spoken face-to-face with a man alone before. In the past, either Livia or her closest friends would have been by her side. Now, sitting in front of Livia's boyfriend, she felt a bit embarrassed.
Xavier chuckled inwardly, pondering her innocence—was it genuine or merely a performance as adept as Livia's?"You're sitting in front of me, of course I want to know your name."
Alison looked at him in disbelief. Why was Livia’s boyfriend asking for her name? A strange sense of excitement filled her heart.
"My name is Alison."
The more Xavier looked at her, the more interesting she seemed. Since Livia had wronged him, and the dead couldn't be brought back, he wondered if...
He stopped his thoughts and said, "It seems our meeting here tonight was destined!"
Alison looked at him, puzzled, thinking: Does Livia’s boyfriend always talk strangely?
Her heart trembled slightly as she replied, "Destined to meet?"
Xavier smiled and said, "Wasn't our encounter destined, then?"
Alison nodded, feeling like she should find an excuse to leave.
Xavier said, "We don’t need to be so formal. You don’t have to call me Mr. Grantley; just call me Xavier, and I’ll call you Alison."
