“Let’s go, I’ll take you home for a nap. We can talk more when I get off work tonight, okay?”
Sophia, knowing he had to work, agreed.
After Evan dropped Sophia off at home, he didn’t leave right away. Sitting in the car, he seemed lost in thought, his eyes deep and contemplative. It was a while before he restarted the car and drove off.
The moment Sophia’s head hit the pillow, she fell asleep. She dreamed she was back in her senior year classroom, chatting with her deskmate about their dream weddings. When she woke up, she felt a bit disoriented.
She realized that her younger self had once longed for an extravagant wedding, but now as an adult, she didn’t see it as important anymore.
In the afternoon, as soon as the food was on the table, Evan came back. After dinner, he pulled out a stack of invitations from his bag, “You should handle the invites for your classmates.”
Sophia looked at the stack of invitations in surprise. The efficiency of a top student was indeed impressive!
Glancing at him, she felt a mischievous urge. She took one of the invitations and, nibbling on the pen, said, “Leonard must be invited...”
“Who?”
Sophia’s lips curled into a playful smile, “Leonard~”
Evan’s face darkened, “Say that again?”
Sophia, sensing an opportunity, moved closer, “You know, last time you mentioned that I only had eyes for Leonard. Why would you think that?”
She and Leonard had never had anything between them, so why did he think that way?
Evan was caught off guard by her question, a flash of discomfort crossing his face. Could he admit he was jealous?
This went back to their high school days. When Leonard first transferred to their class, rumors quickly spread that Sophia had a crush on him. At first, Evan didn’t care, but over time, Sophia’s reactions started to bother him.
At that time, he was sitting right behind her. Every time someone mentioned Leonard, she would smile.
Evan felt that during that period, she had smiled more than he had ever seen in their entire time together.
What he didn’t know was that Sophia found her classmates’ jokes amusing and saw no harm in them. She carried on as usual because she had nothing to hide.
“Hey, I asked you a question,” Sophia’s voice broke his reverie.
Evan looked at her, “You really had nothing with him?”
“Evan, have a heart! If I had anything with Leonard, would you even be in the picture?”
Sophia glared at him, frustrated, “You ungrateful man! How did I get so bewitched on our blind date to agree to marry you?”
Evan: “...”
Neither of them spoke, and the atmosphere became tense, reminiscent of the times she had asked for a divorce and he had ignored her.
Just as Sophia thought they were back to square one, Evan suddenly grabbed her hand and pulled her into his arms.
“Are you mad?”
“...Humph!”
Evan chuckled softly, “How can I make it up to you?”
“Apologize!”
“Alright, my mistake.”
Sophia had never seen him so humble and coaxing herself. She glanced at him, pouting, and then turned away, hiding a smile.
“So, are you still inviting Leonard?”
Sophia: “...”
Before bed, Sophia pulled out a quilt from the cabinet and spread it on the other side of the bed. She wrapped herself in a blanket and settled down to sleep.
When Evan came out of the bathroom and saw the two quilts on the bed, he paused momentarily before walking over, unfazed, and slipped under Sophia’s blanket.
The weather was getting cooler, and the sudden rush of cold air made Sophia shiver. She gasped and tried to pull the blanket back, “Don’t steal my blanket.”
Before she could finish her sentence, she was enveloped in his strong arms.
“You’re mine, how can it be stealing?”
Sophia, feeling sleepy, gave a couple of weak protests before settling comfortably in his embrace and falling asleep.
Evan, watching her quickly drift off, sighed softly and pulled her closer.
As Evan had assured her, she didn’t need to worry about the wedding preparations. So, Sophia continued with her routine, leaving even the task of addressing the invitations to Evan.
One day, Sophia received a call from Mia.
“Sophia, are you and Evan having a wedding banquet?”
Sophia replied nonchalantly, “Yes, I didn’t want one, but they insisted.”
Mia hesitated before asking, “Did you invite Leonard?”
“No.”
Though Sophia had mentioned inviting Leonard to tease Evan, she didn’t genuinely intend to do so. She assumed Evan wouldn’t have invited Leonard, considering the potential discomfort.
“But Leonard asked if he should go with me. Are you sure he didn’t get an invitation?”
Sophia: “Oh... I’ll check with Evan.”
Mia rolled her eyes on the other end, “So, you didn’t know?”
“It’s a long story. Just know that Evan is handling the invites.”
“Sophia, is Evan handling the entire wedding?”
“Yeah, how did you know?”
Mia paused, then said, “Even after all these years, he still spoils you so much.”
Sophia didn’t catch Mia’s underlying meaning, “You should have received your invitation by now, right? Make sure to come.”
“... I will.”
After hanging up, Mia sighed. Who would have thought that Evan, the studious type, would still be romantic enough to insist on a wedding banquet six months after getting their marriage license?
She was genuinely happy for Sophia, who was clearly cherished and loved. She can now lead a carefree life.
……
Days passed quickly, and before they knew it, the wedding was only three days away.
It was stranged that Sophia, who hadn’t felt any nerves before, now found herself too anxious to eat or sleep properly.
One evening, snuggled in Evan’s arms, she said, “I heard that the bride and groom shouldn’t see each other before the wedding. Won’t us sleeping together bring bad luck?”
Evan was taken aback.
"Evan, did you say that both your colleagues and our classmates will be coming that day? What if they get too carried away?"
Evan put down the book in his hand and lifted her chin, “What are you worried about?”
“I’m not worried. I’m just... nervous. When I’m nervous, I mess things up, and when I mess things up...”
“Don’t worry, as long as I’m here, nothing will go wrong.”
Sophia wanted to say more, but Evan tossed his book aside and adjusted his position, “If you’re not sleepy, we can do some exercise.”
Sophia knew exactly what he meant and blushed furiously, giving him a playful punch on the chest, “Stop being so inappropriate. I’m trying to talk about serious matters.”
“I am serious.”
“...”
There was no way to continue the conversation.
