While saying these words, Evan had a slight smile on his lips, but his eyes were exceptionally cold.
Sophia immediately stood up, "What do you mean? What do you mean about me and Leonard?"
She barely exchanged glances with Leonard, let alone anything else. What did he mean by making things easier for her and Leonard?
"You like him, and he likes you, don’t you?"
"Bullshit!" Sophia blurted out, not caring about decorum, glaring at Evan with anger. "I get it. You must be afraid of not being able to explain to your family about our divorce, so you’re putting the blame on me. This way, our parents will only blame me, not you, the great Dr. Hunter!"
Unbelievable!
It’s one thing if he didn’t like her, but to slander her was intolerable!
Evan was momentarily stunned by her outburst, then chuckled softly, "See? The first time you swore in high school was for Leonard, and now you’re swearing again for Leonard. Is it so hard to admit you like him?"
Sophia took a deep breath, trying to stay calm, but she couldn’t.
"Evan, you’re making things up! When did I ever say I liked him? If you keep making things up, I……I’ll sue you for slander!"
This was infuriating. She clearly liked him, not Leonard!
If it weren’t for the class reunion, she would have forgotten what Leonard looked like.
Evan was seriously discussing this issue, but her sudden mention of slander stunned him for a few seconds.
"Forget it, trying to reason with a bookworm who only knows surgeries and patients is pointless. I’m done here."
Sophia raised her chin and huffed, walking into her room.
Evan turned to look at her closed door, his gaze deep. It took him a long while to look away and go to the guest room.
The next morning, before dawn, Sophia left with her suitcase.
After thinking it over all night, she decided she wouldn’t let Evan and Charlotte have an easy divorce. So, she decided to move out for a while and make herself hard to find, so the divorce couldn’t happen.
When Evan woke up and saw the main bedroom door open, he went over to see the bed neatly made and her daily used skincare products gone.
Standing there for a while, he pulled out his phone to call Sophia.
On the other end, Sophia was in the kitchen cooking, and her phone was on the coffee table in the living room.
Mr. Lancaster called her several times with no response, so he answered the phone.
"Evan, Sophia is cooking. Do you need something?"
Evan’s voice quickly came through, "Father, Sophia has been unhappy lately. Let her stay with you for a few days. I’ll pick her up after my business trip."
Mr. Lancaster immediately put on a stern face, "Nonsense! She’s a grown woman, and she runs back home when she’s unhappy. People will think she’s been wronged by her husband."
Evan: "..."
"Evan, don’t worry about your trip. We’ll take good care of Sophia."
"Alright, thank you, Father."
"No trouble at all."
Taking care of his own daughter wasn’t troublesome at all.
After hanging up, Mr. Lancaster walked to the kitchen door with a stern face and coughed heavily, "Sophia, what was the reason you gave for coming back home?"
Sophia, humming a tune while ladling soup, didn’t look back, "I got promoted to store manager at the main store. I’m staying here for a few days since it’s closer to home before moving back."
The truth was: Sophia was a photographer at a bridal photography company. Her boss had recently promoted her to a senior photographer position at the main store with a higher salary, but she had declined because she didn’t want to commute that far.
Since her parents didn’t follow her to work, they wouldn’t know she was still at her original store.
"Is that really the reason? Nothing else?" Mr. Lancaster didn’t believe her.
Sophia turned around, eyes wide, "What other reason do you think I have for coming back?"
She wasn’t about to tell them she had run away from home.
Evan had argued with her, and he wouldn’t care for her. He might already be enjoying his time with Charlotte.
Thinking about this made her heart sink, and her mood worsened.
"If there’s nothing else, that’s good. Oh, by the way, Evan called for you earlier. Call him back when you have a moment."
"What?!" Sophia lost her composure.
They had fought so fiercely, and he still called and did nothing else. How thick-skinned was he?
Wait, why did he call?
A bad feeling welled up inside her, almost making her lose her cool.
"Dad, what... what did he say?"
"What else? He told us to take good care of you."
"......"
"You’re such a child. Just because he’s going on a business trip, you come home to avoid cooking. Did you think we’d mind?"
Sophia: "???"
Wasn’t she cooking now?
Mr. Lancaster sighed, wondering how he had raised his daughter to be so spoiled.
He handed Sophia her phone, "Keep your phone with you, so you don’t miss calls."
"Oh."
For the next few days, Evan didn’t call her again, but the closer it got to Friday, the more anxious Sophia became.
Evan knew where she was. If she didn’t show up at the state court on Friday, would he come to drag her there?
Sophia was getting anxious.
On Friday morning, she woke up early.
Seeing her with dark circles under her eyes, Mrs. Lancaster scolded, "Stayed up late again? You’re an adult, not a kid. Stop staying up all night."
Sophia: "Mom, I’m not even thirty yet!"
"I know, you’re just two years away."
Sophia didn’t want to talk to her anymore.
Seeing her leaving with a bag, Mrs. Lancaster asked, "Where are you going so early?"
"Work!"
No way!
She had taken the day off and was going to a neighboring city to avoid Evan.
After a day of wandering around, it was evening when Sophia took the bus back home.
What surprised her was that Evan hadn’t called or texted her all day, and her parents seemed to believe she had gone to work, as they hadn’t called either.
When she got home and walked in, she saw Evan sitting on the couch and couldn’t move her feet.
"Why are you standing there?" Mrs. Lancaster noticed her and waved her over, "Come here."
Sophia shook her head, "No."
Was he here to drag her off for a divorce?
But then she remembered the State Court was closed. Even if he wanted to, he couldn’t.
So she walked over and sat next to Mrs. Lancaster.
Mrs. Lancaster looked at the empty half of the couch next to Evan, then at Sophia squeezed beside her, and said nothing.
"Evan, don’t let her be so headstrong when you get back. Don’t follow her whims. Go home and rest. You must be tired from the trip."
