Mrs. Lancaster didn’t say anything more.
She knew her daughter well and decided to find a time to have a good talk with her.
Although they said they’d come back for spaghetti, it really was just a quick meal before they left.
Sophia didn’t want to leave with Evan, but she also didn’t want to be subjected to her mother's lectures. So, after finishing her spaghetti, she left with Evan.
In the car, Sophia said, "You can drop me off at the corner."
Evan checked the time. He had an hour and a half before his afternoon surgery, not enough to take her home. He found a corner and let her out, then drove back to the hospital.
Standing at the corner, Sophia suddenly didn’t feel like going home. She was angry at herself for lacking resolve.
She had decided to give him the cold shoulder for a while to protest.
But what’s done is done, and being angry won’t change anything.
Sighing, she called Mia and arranged to meet at a coffee shop.
Seeing Sophia’s tired expression, Mia knew she had lied during the morning call.
"Sophia, tell me the truth, did you two have a fight?"
Sophia gave a bitter smile, "If only we could fight."
Mia’s curiosity was piqued, "What’s going on between you and Evan?"
Sophia didn’t hold back, "We got married through a matchmaker. We have no emotional foundation. We’ve been married for half a year, and we’ve never really talked."
Mia had learned last night that they had a matchmaker marriage, but that wasn’t the point. The point was that, despite being married through a matchmaker, they were classmate and they should have something to talk about.
"Is there some misunderstanding between you two?"
Sophia laughed, "We hadn’t seen each other for ten years. What kind of misunderstanding could we have? Maybe he felt forced to marry me and is resentful."
Recalling their blind date, Sophia still found it unbelievable.
Her parents arranged the blind date, and she went with the intention of meeting someone.
When she saw Evan, she said, "Hi, I’m Sophia. You look like that bookworm who sat behind me."
She had clearly seen something flash in Evan’s eyes, but his face rarely showed any expression, so she couldn’t tell what it was.
They both found each other satisfactory, so when Evan suggested getting the marriage certificate, she had no objections.
It wasn’t until she held the warm marriage certificate in her hand that she realized she had married the bookworm who sat behind her!
For days, she hid at home, not daring to go out. Eventually, Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster forced her to move into Evan’s apartment.
Mia’s mouth dropped open in shock, capable of fitting an egg.
It took her a while to find her voice again.
"Sophia, you really didn’t recognize Evan at the blind date?"
Sophia honestly shook her head, "No."
Mia: "I can’t believe it!"
Sophia wasn’t going to admit to being face-blind. She said seriously, "People change a lot, especially someone as outstanding as him. Look at his demeanor; it’s completely different from back then."
"…You have a point."
But Mia thought Sophia must have been tricked.
When a poor student faces off with a top student, there are a thousand ways for the latter to completely outclass the former.
She asked, "Evan doesn’t seem like a bad guy. Why don’t you try talking to him?"
Sophia was troubled, "He always avoids me, never giving me a chance. Mia, if your husband didn’t love you, would you divorce him?"
Mia gave her a look, "You’re trying to say Evan doesn’t love you, right? Last night we voted for the most faithful guy in our class, and your husband was voted the most faithful and committed."
"What does that have to do with whether he loves me?"
Mia was tired of rolling her eyes.
"Sophia, you really need to talk to Evan and figure out what’s wrong. No matter how you got married, you are married. Are you planning to live like this forever?"
Sophia shook her head, "That’s why I asked him for a divorce."
Mia: "..."
"Mia, do you think there’s something wrong with me? I insist on divorcing him, but when I see him with another woman, I get so angry. It’s happened several times. I feel like I need to see a psychologist."
Mia didn’t know what to say.
Everyone last night had envied Sophia for acing the college entrance exam, getting into a top university. But now it seemed like she must have been really lucky.
Her intelligence was worrying.
Seeing Mia’s silence, Sophia was more convinced of her theory. She sighed, "Forget it, I should just hurry up and divorce him."
If this continued, she’d end up going crazy.
Mia didn’t stop her but had her own plans.
That afternoon, when Evan finished work, Mia intercepted him at the hospital entrance.
"Evan, can we talk?"
Evan frowned, ready to refuse, but then she said, "I want to talk about Sophia."
"...Alright."
In the coffee shop across from the hospital, Mia took a sip of coffee and got straight to the point.
"I saw Sophia today. She’s very unhappy. Do you know why?"
Evan, being the type of person who always maintained control, stayed silent and waited for her to continue.
Mia didn’t beat around the bush, "She said she wants to divorce you."
She watched his reaction closely.
Sure enough, his hand tightened around the coffee cup.
Mia smirked, "She must have told you, and you didn’t agree."
If he had agreed, Sophia wouldn’t have said what she did to Mia.
"What are you trying to say?"
Mia didn’t spell it out.
"Evan, with your looks and job, you won’t lack for partners. But Sophia is different. She doesn’t even realize she likes you. If you treat her the same way you do other women, you might lose her forever."
"What do you mean?"
Mia felt like an mother worrying over this couple.
She sighed, "Sophia told me she thinks she’s sick..."
"What kind of sickness?"
Mia rolled her eyes, "Listen to me. Sophia said she feels bad when she sees you with other women. She thinks she’s sick."
Evan, though not emotionally intelligent, understood her meaning instantly.
But before he could feel happy, Mia’s next words wiped the smile off his face.
"Even though we know you like her, mutual affection doesn’t always mean compatibility."
Standing up with her bag, Mia said, "As a classmate, I hope you think this through carefully."
When Evan got home, Sophia was eating dinner.
