After a long while, it finally grew quiet inside. Susie had cried herself to sleep.
Shawn went in to check on her, and Lorraine motioned for him to be quiet.
"Where's Lawrence?" Lorraine glanced at the door, wanting to ask him what had happened.
"He left!" Shawn looked at the pale Susie on the bed and sighed. That guy had taken a call and left without explaining anything.
Lorraine looked at him and gestured for him to talk outside, "Is there something between Susie and Lawrence?"
She had noticed a rift between them. Otherwise, why would Susie be crying so much without Lawrence by her side?
Losing a child was when a woman most needed her husband's support.
No one else could understand their pain.
"Uncle's company is in trouble!" Shawn shared what he knew with Lorraine, including David's hospitalization.
Lorraine couldn't take it all in at once, her body swaying.
Shawn quickly helped her sit down.
"So many things have happened, and Susie was still putting on a happy face for me. I'm such a failure as a mother, unable to help them at all!"
Lorraine's heart ached for her daughter, but she couldn't blame Lawrence entirely.
She could see that he loved Susie, or he wouldn't have called her to be with Susie.
"Which room is your uncle in? Take me to him. You've all been keeping this from me!" Lorraine got up, and Shawn quickly supported her.
"You'd better stay here and watch Susie. She shouldn't be left alone." Lorraine stopped Shawn and went to check on her husband herself.
Being in the same hospital, there was no hiding it. Seeing David was much better, Lorraine told him about Susie's situation.
David came to see Susie while she was asleep.
"Stay with her. I'm fine on my own. It's all my fault for being too aggressive back then. Susie wouldn't be suffering if not for me."
Lorraine patted her husband's hand. She just wanted them both to be healthy now.
"Go back and rest. I'll stay here," she said, pushing David back to his room before returning to Susie's side.
Lorraine shuttled between her husband and daughter, taking care of both.
Every day, Lawrence brought chicken soup for Susie, though she didn't want to see him. Lorraine fed it to her instead.
Susie thought her mother had made it and obediently drank it.
Seeing her eat, Lawrence felt somewhat relieved. He stood outside the hospital for hours before leaving.
He was afraid going inside would upset her, hindering her recovery.
His new company was very busy.
Every night after work, he returned to the hospital to watch over Susie, only going in once she was asleep.
Susie knew this and always slept with her back to him.
One morning, she finally let him stay. Lawrence was as happy as a young boy.
Susie glanced at him, then looked away coldly.
"Those papers, sign them."
Shawn had just delivered the divorce papers. Hearing Susie's words, he handed them to Lawrence.
Lawrence looked at them, his pupils constricting, anger flashing across his handsome face.
He looked at the resolute Susie and said firmly,
"I won't sign. You can forget about divorcing me!"
Susie, provoked, glared at him, her voice cold and angry.
"Lawrence, do you think this is fun? I'm not asking for your opinion. Sign the papers. We're done."
"Isn't this what you wanted? Sign them and stop making me sick!"
Lawrence's pupils shrank as he suppressed his anger, tearing the papers into shreds.
"Who said this is what I wanted, huh?"
Shawn looked at the two of them, the tension so thick it could snap, ready to intervene. Susie shouted at Lawrence,
"Lawrence, I don't care what you think. I'm telling you, I am divorcing you. Tear up the papers if you want. I'll print more. If you refuse to sign, I'll see you in court!"
Susie clenched her fists, breathing heavily. Did Lawrence think she couldn't divorce him without his signature?
Susie was momentarily taken aback but quickly straightened her back. She had nothing to fear from him now.
"You wouldn't dare!" Lawrence was livid, glaring at her with a face he'd never shown her before, full of rage.
Even if he refuses to sign, she has plenty of ways to proceed with the divorce.
"Why wouldn't I dare? You were the one who cheated. The judge will side with me!"
Seeing her forced composure, Lawrence's anger faded slightly. He rubbed his temples.
Her body hadn't fully recovered, and here he was, arguing with her.
"I'm not going to argue with you. Calm down. I won't agree to this. Focus on getting better."
Leaving those words, Lawrence turned and left, his face dark with anger. Staying longer would only lead to endless fights.
This woman, as soon as she felt better, wanted to divorce him.
Never!
