Lawrence followed as they transferred Susie to a room, not daring to leave her side, carefully attending to her.
As the IV finished, the doctor said she would wake up that evening, but as midnight passed, she still hadn't woken up.
Lawrence held her hand, rubbing it constantly, never taking his eyes off her.
He knew she didn't want to wake up to see him.
"Susie, take good care of your body. Once you recover, you can do whatever you want!"
"Susie, Our dad doesn't know you're in the hospital. You don't want him to worry, do you?"
Lawrence gazed steadily at her, but the person lying on the bed remained motionless.
Lawrence sighed.
After some time, the sound of gentle breathing came from the bedside.
Susie opened her eyes, staring at the ceiling, tears welling up in her eyes.
She could no longer feel the baby.
She had lost so much blood; how could the baby have survived?
Feeling the weight on her hand, she turned her head and saw Lawrence sleeping by her bedside. Tears rolled down her face, soaking the pillow.
She coldly looked at the man sleeping by the bed and withdrew her hand.
Lawrence woke up, sitting up straight in a hurry, overjoyed to see her awake.
"Susie..."
"Get lost!"
Susie looked away, staring blankly ahead, lost in the sorrow of losing her child.
Coupled with Lawrence's actions, her heart was frozen.
"Susie!"
Lawrence's brow furrowed, worry etched on his face. Susie's cold, distant expression cut him deeply.
The once confident man now looked a bit lost.
"Get some rest."
He looked at her for a moment longer before turning to leave.
Lawrence didn't leave the hospital; he sat at the door of the ward, his head in his hands, listening to the sound of her heartbroken sobs.
Tears streamed down his face uncontrollably.
He had failed her.
Losing the child was as much a blow to him as it was to her.
He never imagined she was pregnant. Just as he learned they had a child, they were on the verge of losing it.
That night, neither of them could sleep.
Susie eventually fell into a fitful sleep after crying for what felt like hours.
Worried about her, Lawrence rubbed his face harshly, trying to stay alert, then quietly went back inside.
Seeing the dried tear streaks on her face, his heart tightened.
He gently wiped away her tears and softly soothed, "Susie, please don't cry. It's bad for your health."
Whether Susie heard him or not, she stopped crying but began to have nightmares.
She dreamt of a beautiful, adorable child looking at her coldly, drifting farther away from her.
No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't catch up.
"Baby..."
"Baby, please don't leave Mommy... I'm sorry!"
Watching her cry out in her sleep, Lawrence wished he could take her pain away. He leaned down, holding her tightly.
"Susie, don't do this. We'll have another child. It breaks my heart to see you cry!"
His hands gently stroked her hair as he comforted her softly.
"Susie, I'm sorry!"
"Susie, it's my fault for not protecting you. Don't blame yourself!"
"Susie..."
Lawrence stayed up all night, holding her and soothing her until she finally calmed down. He didn't let go, fearing she might wake up unsettled.
