The operation lasted a full year, with relentless cooperation with the police.
Amidst this, a small twist occurred.
Nathan, Maxwell's cousin, remained missing and was listed among the disappeared. Adam remained silent about this matter
The police efforts progressed steadily, but the entangled networks of power couldn't be dismantled overnight. Thus, when Maxwell was bailed out, he waited for him at a club.
Instead of avoiding surveillance, he took Maxwell to an old house in the suburbs. Perhaps someone called the police. His phone was flooded with calls. Expressionless, he switched it off.
Behind him lay a myriad of tools. Activating the live streaming function on the app he developed, the viewer count skyrocketed; surely, this incident was now trending.
He donned the raincoat he wore when visiting my grave. The livestream audience surged.
"Oh my god, what is he doing?"
"Is he going to stream a murder?"
"No, wait, the police are already investigating."
"Didn't Maxwell have his girlfriend killed?"
"But this makes him a murderer too; he'll face punishment."
When Maxwell woke up, bound, he first lashed out with curses. Unfazed, he leisurely searched for a suitable tool.
Maxwell grew fearful. "I'll give you money, damn it! Just don't kill me!" Obese and greasy, his plea for mercy was unappealing. Swiftly, he slashed a knife across Maxwell's leg, blood spurting.
The live stream was terminated then. But the goal was achieved. I said, "Adam, he'll eventually find him."
He understood my implication. "The trial takes time, and I don't have much left, nor do you, right?"
I pressed my lips together; indeed, time was fleeting, and I was nearing dissolution.
Maxwell screamed in agony, sweat dripping from his forehead.
He roared, "Who the hell are you talking to? Let me go!"
Frowning, he then smiled. "You'll see."
Slowly, he lifted a hammer. "And your vulgar language is really..."
The hammer struck Maxwell's mouth, shattering teeth that mixed with flesh, before stuffing a towel into the foul orifice.
Lowering his gaze, he continued, "Really irritates me."
In that moment, I comprehended — the purpose behind his live stream.
Online content can never be fully erased; there's always a way to uncover it.
And what he aimed to do was utilize this live stream to push public opinion to its pinnacle.
