My soul ascended into the air. I saw blood staining the ground, reflecting the blood-red sunset filling the sky. I saw the man clutching my body stubbornly, trembling lips whispering my name repeatedly.
I drifted for days, witnessing the operating room lights flickering on and off. I saw him holding onto my cold body tightly, emitting low, mournful cries from his throat, suppressed yet agonizing.
I saw him slowly walking back home alone from the hospital, his gaze distant, his face blank and bewildered.
I also saw him awkwardly but earnestly preparing formula for the little baby. The baby seemed to sense his despondent mood, refusing to cry or fuss even after going hungry for so long, just smiling as he held the bottle towards him. He managed to force a smile, albeit embarrassed and awkward, tears streaming down his face.
My heart clenched suddenly. I reached out to touch him but found I couldn't. I looked at my translucent fingers, pursed my lips, and slowly withdrew. I wasn't good to him.
Without me burdening him, he could live a good life. He could find a gentle wife who would dote on him, shower him with affection, cuddle with him, and whisper sweet nothings. I rubbed my reddened eyes, pretending to be at peace.
Just as I turned away, he suddenly glanced in my direction. His dazed eyes, filled with despair and impending breakdown, threatened to overflow along with his reddened eyes.
The wind whistled past, and the window creaked open. There was nothing outside, only the dark, lonely night stretching into the distance.
