I had a prenatal appointment scheduled for today. As I emerged from the hospital, I saw Xaviers' mother trembling as she hurried here by bus. When she saw the medical report in my hand, tears streamed down her face.
She immediately sat down on the ground, crying out in anguish: "How could you be so heartless? My grandson, what sins have I committed to have a daughter-in-law like you..."
Her cries were so loud that they attracted the attention of passersby, among whom I noticed a familiar figure. She wore a white dress and minimal makeup, accompanied by someone who looked like a nanny.
"Grandma, what's wrong?" she asked, puzzled, but her eyes darted towards me, and there was a barely perceptible smirk on her lips.
Hearing her question, the old lady's wails grew louder. She began recounting her tragic fate: her husband's death, her dependence on her son's family, her son's neglect, and her daughter-in-law's daily cold treatment, even refusing to let her sit at the dining table.
Gradually, the crowd began to sympathize with the old lady, and many looked at me with disdain and disgust.
"Yvonne, with grandma in such a pitiful state, as a daughter-in-law, you should be filial," Lindsay chimed in with a smile.
I glanced at her, said nothing, and turned to leave. However, my wrist was grabbed from behind by an indignant middle-aged man. "Why are you leaving? You bully an old lady like this every day. How could you do that?" he retorted angrily.
"Believe everything she says?" I couldn't hold back anymore. "She abandoned her seven-year-old son without a word, and now, after twenty years, she suddenly comes to rely on her son..."
"Nonsense!" The old lady interrupted me hastily, before bursting into tears once more.
The crowd's accusations grew louder, and their venomous curses fell into my ears one by one.
Lindsay stood there, enjoying my humiliation with a smug smile.
Since marrying into the Smith family, she was no longer the delicate flower she used to be.
Looking around, I felt powerless for the first time.
