I touched my still-flat belly and stood up.
My bags and clothes crammed the small rental. Many items were unnecessary, but Xavier helped store everything without complaint. He integrated me calmly into his life without coldness, opposition, or warnings—a slight deviation from the novel.
Perhaps he concealed his pain. The one-bedroom was cluttered, yet the bright yellow wallpaper, lit warmly, added a cozy touch. Fresh from the shower, Xavier hung clothes by the window. The deep night outside contrasted with the bright city lights in the distance.
A light purple slip dress fluttered next to his garments, stirring emotions. He turned from the window and saw me at the bedroom door.
"Xavier, let's sleep in separate rooms," I suggested after careful thought.
Keeping distance and not pressuring him would spare him pain, potentially sparing me a tragic end.
Expecting agreement, his response surprised me. "There's only one room." "What about the sofa?" I inquired.
He calmly countered, "What do you think?" The old sofa, indeed too small for lying down, silenced me.
