Night fell, and Inked Impressions grew quiet. The wind chimes tinkled softly, each note echoing in my heart. The glass pane turned into a mirror, and I dared not stare openly at him. Instead, I feigned interest in the scenery outside, stealing glances at his reflection.
When the last customer left, I took a deep breath and asked him, "Ethan, can I ask you something?"
"You can ask."
"What kind of girl do you like?"
"I haven't really thought about it. Just someone I click with."
Summoning courage, I locked eyes with him, cheeks flushed, shamelessly staring until he arched an eyebrow playfully, his gaze searing my ears.
"Do you...think we click at all?"
Ethan chuckled, a mix of amusement and frustration.
"Aren't you just a high school student? What do you know about love?"
"I know. How could I not?"
"Then who's been going around telling everyone I won't date until I'm thirty?"
"That's because I'm scared...scared someone else might snatch you away."
"Don't like me. If you don't focus on your studies, don't come back here."
All I managed was a sullen, "You old-fashioned man."
"Fine, don't come here again. I mean it." I packed my books into my bag, fighting back tears that stubbornly trickled down.
Rare panic flashed across Ethan's face as he handed me tissues to wipe my tears.
"Please, don't cry. Let's talk about this after your college entrance exams, okay?"
