Every day, I stayed at Renee's house, painting.
One day, when she returned from work, she asked me, "Have you heard from Luke?"
"No."
"Well, you might not know it, but Luke has been coming to our bar every night, drinking himself into a stupor. It seems worse than when he proposed to you last time."
"He must be ecstatic, marrying his dream girl."
I could only envy such happiness.
"I doubt it. I heard him calling your name."
Renee checked out Luke's post and found an update he'd made yesterday.
"My fiancée saw my answer and called off the wedding, saying she wanted to make way for me and her sister. At first, I felt guilty, but then excitement and surprise followed—I would finally be with the woman I've always dreamed of.
But after a few days, I realized... after all these years, something feels different about her. She's not as understanding as I remember her. Now, she constantly badmouths my fiancée, looking and sounding so sour...
The more she speaks ill of her, the more it reminds me how good my fiancée was to me... What's happening to me? Shouldn't I be happy...?"
Online critics were ruthless.
"Thank goodness your fiancée found out in time and saved herself from your toxicity."
"Life imitates art; there really are such scumbags. Men's words can't be trusted indeed..."
"The grass is always greener on the other side."
"So, once he got his true love, she turned into a mundane girl, huh?!"
"..."
These comments had nothing to do with me. I couldn't understand Luke's mindset and didn't care to.
All I wished for was we don't bother each other again, as I wouldn't spare him a glance anymore.
Yet, that night, an unknown number appeared on my phone.
"Sophia, it's me. Can we meet again?"
"I'm sorry, but I don't think there's a need for us to communicate anymore."
Luke persisted, "Then can we talk on the phone? I'm really confused. I thought I'd be happy marrying her, but..."
"I'm sorry, I'm not a therapist. I can't solve your emotional problems. Find someone else."
