Not long after that, my father called.
Now in his older years, his temper wasn't as fiery as before; instead, his voice was gentle.
"Sophia, what's this disagreement between you and Luke about? You're not taking his calls, and you say you want to cancel the wedding. Wasn't it supposed to be held next week?"
"I assume Emma has told you, Dad. Luke and I aren't going through with the wedding."
"Not going through with it? We've sent out the invitations and made all the arrangements at the hotel—how can you just cancel it like that?"
"It's simple, really. Just replace the bride's name with Emma's—it's clear he got close to me to become part of her family so that he can protect her under the guise of family."
My father's tone turned a little angry, "Luke, what is this all about?"
I hadn't expected Luke to be right there with him.
"Mr. Hathaway, it's not like that at all. I originally intended to marry Sophia, but we encountered some issues."
My sister's voice interjected abruptly, "It's my fault. Luke was my ex-boyfriend, and he never really got over me. With my recent divorce, it just happened."
"You... you're both behaving recklessly! How could you do this to Sophia?!"
Luke's voice grew more resolute, "I'm truly sorry, Mr. Hathaway. I'll find another way to make it up to Sophia. I hope you can understand and support us."
Hearing his words, I felt a weight lift off my chest.
My dad said, "Do whatever you want. I won't be there!"
Then, my sister added, "Dad, about that villa in the suburbs you bought a couple of years ago..."
"Don't call me Dad. I have never acknowledged you as my daughter. Sophia is my only child!" I heard the clink of a cup being set down harshly. His temper, which had just calmed, flared up again. My father was furious.
And it was all because of me.
Inappropriately, I felt a touch of warmth in my heart. My stepmother had been obsessed with gambling for the past couple of years, losing a lot of money, and my father's feelings for her had long since cooled. Emma, not being her biological daughter, was barely mentioned.
"That villa I bought four years ago was registered under Sophia's name from the start. So don't anyone have any ideas about it!" my father added sternly.
"Sophia, don't be mad, they're meant to be together," Dad's voice softened. "Sophia, where are you? I'll come find you."
"No need, I'm doing alright. Don't worry about me," I replied before hanging up.
Soon after that, Luke's wedding partner changed to my sister Emma.
Nosy relatives bombarded me with messages, probing for details. I responded uniformly with, "Don't ask me. I just know they're each other's true love."
I don't know what my father told them later, but they all declared they wouldn't attend the wedding.
