She just sat there without speaking. Her eyes, hidden behind the sunglasses, seemed to be looking at Landon, but he couldn't be sure, so he politely said,
"Hello, I'm Rhodez Group's Landon. Without your permission, I ordered you a cappuccino; I hope you don't mind."
The woman remained silent, sitting quietly for a long time.
Long enough for Landon to feel awkward sipping nearly half his coffee before she slowly raised her hand and removed the gear from her head.
"Landon, thank you for remembering I like cappuccino."
The familiar voice, familiar eyes, familiar face.
Landon froze.
Who else could it be but Penelope, whom he'd been chasing for three years? The very same Penelope who had framed Amber six years ago and caused the death of his child three years ago!
She looked weathered now, undoubtedly having suffered during her three years on the run, appearing a decade older.
But Landon felt no sympathy, only disgust at the sight of Penelope.
He hesitated for only a moment before getting up to leave.
"Landoooon!" Penelope hastily called out to him.
Her voice was hoarse and loud, jarringly so in the quiet café.
Landon was repulsed beyond measure, his brows tightly furrowed, but he forced himself to sit back down with patience.
"Penelope, you dare show up in front of me?" His tone was unfriendly.
Penelope's gaze was somewhat empty, no longer lively as it was three years ago, but she still stared at Landon as if trying to see through him.
"Landon, do you really hate me that much?" Penelope sounded as wronged as she had three years ago.
Landon sneered, "Hate? You're not worthy of it!"
"Why?" Penelope's eyes began to mist over. "I'm the one who has loved you the most all these years! I was the first to lend a helping hand when your company was in trouble!"
"Love me? Haha, Penelope, you have the nerve to say that. I devoted myself to that girl for so long, thinking it was you! I gave you the title of fiancée, used my child's life to cure your illness, but what did I get in return?"
As Landon spoke, his eyes reddened. "I almost lost Amber because of the blindness you induced. I killed my own son because of you!"
"That money, I'll refund it. Today, I'll pretend I never saw you. We're even. If I ever see you again, Penelope," Landon glared at her menacingly, "you'll pay the price."
After Landon spoke, the air fell into silence, punctuated only by his heavy breathing. Controlling his resentment towards Penelope must have taken considerable effort.
"Landon, everything I did was because I love you..." After a long while, Penelope whispered her explanation.
"Then please don't force this kind of love on me again! I cannot bear it!"
With nothing more to say, Landon rose and walked out, striding away without looking back.
Penelope watched his departing figure silently, tears streaming down her cheeks, silently blaming Amber for this setback.
Meanwhile, Amber was receiving Sawyer's jacket:
"Tomorrow is Sunny's memorial day. He was shy; I want to go alone. You don't need to accompany me, nor send anyone with me."
Sawyer felt it was risky, but after a moment's hesitation, he agreed.
"Let the driver and bodyguards wait outside the cemetery."
"Okay. How are things going on your end?"
