Amber now fully realized the magnitude of her mistake.
Cast out from the Nolan family under false pretenses, she had believed that changing her name and keeping a low profile would ensure a peaceful life with her child. Her decade-long love for Landon had led her to lose everything instead.
In the dim, suffocating darkness of the room, she sat in a foggy daze for a long while.
The small nurse entered, flicking on the light switch, and the sudden brightness caused Amber's eyes to squint reflexively. The nurse sighed, pity etched on her face.
"Ms. Nolan, you've been like this all day."
"Sunny has finished his surgery, hasn't he?"
"Yes…" The nurse hesitated.
"Where's Sunny?"
"He's still in the ward. You can visit him now, Ms. Nolan."
Sunny lay unconscious, his little face devoid of color. Amber bent down and cradled her fragile child, tears welling in her swollen eyes.
Sunny had endured so much hardship alongside her, faced countless cold shoulders. She could bear humiliation, false accusations, become a stepping stone for Penelope, but Sunny could not. Sunny deserved purity. Sunny was the light that kept her going.
The nurse watched with a pang of compassion.
"Miss Nolan, Sunny's constitution is weak, and he's just had surgery. He may not regain consciousness anytime soon. You should rest too."
Amber nodded, her heart aching. She stayed by the bedside through the night.
As dawn broke, Sunny's body burned with fever, sending Amber into a panic. She rushed out of the room to find the on-duty doctor, but upon hearing it was about Sunny, the doctor hesitated.
"Miss Nolan, it's not that we are unwilling to help you, but Mr. Rhodes has given instructions…"
Amber was stunned. Did Landon truly leave no room for hope? Did he want Sunny dead?
"I want Landon! Make him come here! I want him to see that Sunny is his son, that he'll regret it if anything happens to Sunny!"
The doctor gestured, and a nurse went to call while others restrained the distraught Amber, readying a sedative.
Then, Penelope, clad in a patient gown, walked by the corridor.
Casually squatting before Amber, she whispered in her ear.
"Don't struggle, Amber. If I were you, I'd cherish the last moments with your dying son. Don't let him be alone."
"Right? Tsk, you shouldn't have given birth to this child. Why did you?"
Amber's eyes blazed, fixing on the culprit.
"You're not sick. Why must you kill Sunny? Why not kill me directly? Why?"
Penelope sneered.
"After all, he's Landon's child. I won't let him live to contest the Rhodes family inheritance with my child."
As Penelope casually stroked her flat belly, realization dawned on Amber!
Penelope was pregnant. She was clearing obstacles for her own child!
"Penelope, I'll kill you! If Sunny doesn't survive, neither will you!"
