Expecting a sleepless night, I woke up on the sofa at noon.
As soon as I woke up, the door to the living room was pushed open. Nathaniel emerging from his room, hair tousled.
He barely registered me, treating me like a fleeting shadow before heading to the kitchen. I followed suit.
"What do you want?" He asked tersely.
"I don't know how to leave, or have money for a taxi," I admitted.
He shot me a sidelong glance. "Then stay here forever."
Remaining silent, I persisted in trailing him.
Annoyed, he snapped, "Remember, your dad owes me a lot of money. I won't pay for your fare."
"I understand," I persisted.
Exasperated, he threw some bills at me. "Take it and disappear. You are very annoying."
I picked up the cash. "It's too far to walk to the station."
"Do you think I'll drive you? You consider me a benefactor?" He scoffed.
"I think you're not evil," I said earnestly.
"Are you daft? Not killing you makes me good? Foolishness!"
Amused and irritated, he dismissed me. "Before I change my mind, disappear from my sight."
Reluctantly, I fled with the money.
Yet, within an hour, I returned.
At the bus stop, a video on someone's phone revealed my father's massive debt and flight abroad, his assets seized.
Paralyzed, I stood for thirty minutes absorbing the shock. When clarity returned, I found myself at Nathaniel's door.
I am homeless now.
Nathaniel's initial reaction was irritation.
"Why are you still here?"
"My house is seized."
"Then?"
"I don't know where to go."
"So you come here?" He roared, towering over me. "You're clinging to me?"
"Just... temporarily." I felt hollow out.
"This isn't a charity. Go back where you came from. I'm no saint!"
"Okay."
"Your father owes me, and you show up here? Am I indebted to your family? Believe me when I say I could..."
"I do."
Uttering that last word, my world tilted, darkness engulfed me, and I crumpled to the ground.
