"What are you so afraid of?"
Evan's cool voice made my back stiffen.
I lowered my eyes, filled with bitterness. Yes, what am I afraid of? I'm not the Avery I was three years ago. Why do I lose my composure every time I see him?
I regained my composure and looked at Evan with cold, distant eyes. "Sir, I will compensate you for your car right now."
I didn't want to bother him, but I had no other choice. I couldn't bear to be with this man a moment longer. I pulled out my phone to dial a number, but Evan's hand reached over, covering the hand I was using to make the call.
I tried to shake off his grip but couldn’t. My face hardened, "Remove your hand."
He looked at me with deep, dark eyes that were frightening. I couldn't meet his gaze, afraid that he might see through me, "Is being with me really that unbearable for you?"
Before I could respond, his hand tightened, and I fell into his embrace. His familiar scent enveloped me, a scent that painfully choked my heart. Just as I tried to struggle, his hand clasped tightly around my waist, imprisoning me in his arms.
I was very tense, and cold sweat broke out on my palms.
Could he really have recognized her...
Even if he had, as long as my heart was estranged from him, he and I were just strangers.
"Sir, I don't know you. I don't understand what you're talking about. Please let go."
As I said this, I could feel his body stiffen, his muscles tensing as if suppressing something.By now, I no longer had the desire to delve into his thoughts.
I just wanted to distance myself from this man who had inflicted so much pain on me, better to never cross paths again.
Unexpectedly, he let go of me. I quickly moved away, almost pressing myself against the car door.
He gave a bitter laugh, "I won't hurt you anymore, you don't need to be afraid."
I scoffed coldly, reiterating, "Sir, I really don't know you."
A hurt look flashed across his deep eyes, "Maybe it's better that way." Suddenly, the melancholy disappeared from his demeanor, his lips curling up slightly as he stared intently at me, "It's not too late for us to get acquainted now. I'm Evan, what's your name?"
I frowned, struggling to believe these words could come from this stern man, but none of that mattered anymore. One only has one life to live, and I've been foolish once; that's enough. This man, I can neither afford nor dare to have.
I gave Evan a decisive look, knowing what I was about to do as he yelled to the driver, "Stop the car."
Unfortunately, it was too late. I had already opened the car door and jumped out, rolling a few times on the road as cars whizzed by, narrowly missing being hit twice.
But for me now, being hit by a car was preferable to staying in the same space with him.
Evan quickly got out of the car and held me, his body trembling.
I pushed his arms away, glaring at him with hatred, and shouted, "Get away, don't touch me."
He froze, his gaze complex as he looked at me.
I endured the pain in my elbows and knees, slowly standing up, and walked in the opposite direction from where we came.
He quickly stepped forward, gripping my wrist, "You're hurt, let me take you back."
Evan, so you knew I could get hurt? But after enduring such severe injuries before, this was nothing.
