When police approached me, a chilling fear surged within me.
"Miss Lawrence, we suspect you are involved in a murder case. Please accompany us to the station now."
I was terrified, shaking my head. I didn't want to go to jail, which was like a gaping, bloody maw to me.
Evan followed the police in.
I looked at Evan with pleading eyes. I thought I was over this man, but in this dire moment, he was still the one I hoped would save me.
Evan's face was cold, his gaze full of disdain. "You dared to hurt Megan. You should have anticipated the consequences. I've ensured they'll take special care of you in prison."
My last hope died in the darkness.
I watched Evan smile as if she were saying, 'Avery, this is the price you pay for loving this man.'
I gently touched my swollen hand. It seemed my final moments might be spent in that sunless prison.
I did not resist as two officers led me away.
Unintentionally, I caught a glimpse of something complex in Evan's eyes. A sneer formed on my lips. Wasn't this what he wanted?
The charge of attempted murder was not sustained because Megan survived. However, the charge of assault was upheld, and I was sentenced to five years in prison.
Five years. I scoffed. I doubted I'd even survive five months.
Within a week of my imprisonment, I endured dehumanizing abuses. My broken body housed a barely living soul.
Suddenly one day, I was released because Megan needed me again.
It must be said, Megan is the most ambitious and ruthless woman in the world. She went so far as to have my only remaining kidney removed to kill me, inflicting such cruelty on herself.
I scoffed mockingly. Unfortunately for her, she miscalculated this time.
I was sent to Evan's company. However, I did not go to his office. Instead, I went straight to the rooftop. I sat on the edge, feet dangling, gazing at the world below.I felt like a person forgotten in a corner of this noisy world.
Suddenly, hurried footsteps sounded behind me.
I couldn't help feeling sorrowful. This man only showed concern when Megan needed something from me. Unfortunately, they were all wrong this time.
Turning to Evan, I smiled. "What do you think, Evan? If I jump from the top of your company, will it be tomorrow's front-page news? People say one should die with value. How would you rate my left?"
"Avery, come down now," Evan commanded with a stern face, radiating a daunting presence.
I laughed softly, mockingly staring at him. "Evan, you want me to save your beloved, right? Sadly, you've got the wrong person.Did I ever mention that one of my kidneys is defective?"
I noticed a flicker in Evan's eyes, then his brow furrowed, and he glared at me with intense anger.
I brushed my wind-tousled hair back, "Megan truly is god's favorite. She has not only captured your love but also the favor of fate.
During the last surgery, I bet on whose body would end up with the faulty kidney. I lost." I watched Evan's serious face and burst into laughter. "Ha ha... But I never expected Megan to lose either. We're both going to die, die together."
"Avery, do you think I would believe your lies? Get down here now."
I looked down at my swollen legs, tears dripping onto them.
