The day I returned home, Julian was too busy to pick me up.
Instead, I received a text from an unknown number with Julian's photo. His slightly drunken gaze smiled tenderly at the camera, two buttons undone to reveal his delicate collarbone.
Evelyn had never seen him like this. Yet, I felt nothing.
I sent the photo to my lawyer for archiving.
I had just entered the house when I heard the door unlock.
It wasn't Julian who walked in, but his long-time love, Merlin.
"After all these years, he still uses my birthday as his door code, Evelyn. What do you have to compete with me?" Her look was one of disdain, radiating the arrogance of being cherished.
"Do you enjoy standing guard at the door for us?"
Merlin was unprepared for my comeback:
"Evelyn, had I not gone to study abroad five years ago, Julian will never married you. As the moment I returned, Julian couldn't wait to meet me. If you were wise, you'd pack up and leave here."
I tossed two lemon slices into warm water:
"If I am correct, Miss Frost, you went to Sydney? This is a journey that takes just over twenty hours. Why act as if it's an insurmountable divide that requires a breakup?"
"Yet he wouldn't spend time to visit you in Australia. How can you trust that he loves you? Were you misled by him?"
Merlin paused: "How could Julian afford a plane ticket then? If he had money, he would pay for his mother's medical expenses himself, and wouldn't marry you just for money.?"
"So, you acknowledge that five years ago, Julian couldn't even afford a plane ticket. He was a true dependent husband."
I turned around with wine glass in hand, "As he's the CEO of Mercer Corporation, you want me to get out of the way now.Ha, it’s like a robbery."
As I finished speaking, police sirens sounded outside.
Merlin frowned: "Did you call the police?"
I raised my glass to her: "In the face of robbery, any rational person would call the police. Please take note." As they escorted her away, she continued shouting: "What charges do you think you can bring against me?"
