Asher's stride halted. Dressed impeccably in a white suit, Sage, in her high heels, stepped in front of him.
"I've already told you we have a driver. Why skip an important meeting to pick me up personally? I'm not a little girl now." she playfully scolded, her face a mix of faux complaint and undeniable joy.
Clutching the bouquet of roses tighter, I felt the pain of the thorns prick my palm.
Once, Asher had shown me the same attentiveness, always there for my departures and arrivals, no matter the distance or his schedule.
Now, that special treatment was no longer exclusively mine. In that moment, I acknowledged, even after four years, Asher remained unresolved in my heart.
Compelling myself to divert my gaze, I offered Evan a strained smile.
"Let's move on; my parents are waiting." I said. Evan courteously nodded towards them, ready to escort me away.
Sage's call of surprise halted us. "Lark? I hadn't realized you'd returned. You're looking lovelier than ever; I barely recognized you. Is this your boyfriend? You're quite a match."
"Asher and I are getting married. It would mean a lot if you, as an old classmate, could attend." she stated.
Maintaining my composure, I accepted the invitations with an air of detachment: "Certainly, I'll make it." I assured her, parting with a smile.
Throughout this, Asher remained silent, almost invisible.
Only as Evan and I stepped into the elevator, and the doors began to close, did I catch Asher's intense gaze locked on me.
My heart raced, prompting me to step aside, out of his view.
"Lark, is something wrong?" Evan inquired.
I merely shook my head, a sense of disquiet lingering within me.
