During the first month after Elara's death, I often forget this fact.
Waking up in the familiar bed, I instinctively turned to push her feet off me, but grasped only air.
My side is empty. She was gone and would never be back.
Stunned for a long time, I remembered that in her final days, she rarely clung to me like that for long time.
A week later, I gradually regained my composure. I abandoned the project in England; with my parents devastated by Elara's death, I needed to look after them, shuttling daily between the company and my parents' home.
The house where I lived with Elara was locked up and listed for sale through an agent. Really, there was nothing to run from; the house was left spotlessly clean, devoid of anything related to her.
Oh, except for a silly bear with a note left on it, "For Eve." I recall her saying I looked quite like that bear.
Bitterly, I wondered, was this meant to hand me over to Eve? Carrying a sense of unnameable irritation, I casually threw it into the yard.
One day, my mother suddenly suggested, "Let's visit the place where Elara died."
Mentioning Elara, her eyes began to redden, "I keep dreaming about that sea,may be due to that Elara wants to see me."
After finishing her words, both she and my father looked at me. I served some food to my mother, "I can have the driver take you there."
My mother looked at me, "Aren't you going to see Elara?"
"It's just a sea, besides, I've always been afraid of the sea."
My father nodded, "Simon was scared of even the ocean world as a child. It is Ok.We will go ourself."
On TV, they showed the magnificent auroras in Canada, the night sky infused with a swirling green luminescence. I turned away, collected the dishes into the sink, and turned on the faucet.
After they returned,My mother brought back a seashell from the beach, placing it by my bed. My father explained that as she was calling Elara's name, the shell was brought to her feet by the waves, as if it was a gift from Elara.
Beyond that, life went on as usual.
